What is an benchmark

A benchmark is a known elevation of a fixed object. Common examples are metal plate set in concrete non-movable parts of fire hydrants and manhole covers.

What is a Datum Point?

A mathematically defined reference point, usually previously surveyed by the government and marked with a brass plate.

What is a temporary benchmark?

A point used for the purpose of transferring elevations to the actual work area in case her post job site. Cannot be seen from the insurance set up due to obstructions.

What is the station?

A point where the rod is held for reading

What is the term forsight (FS)

A rod reading towards an unknown elevation.

What is the term backsight (BS) ?
