The fall of France (1940) occurred after Hitler took over Poland and wanted the final blow to be on France. Hitler successfully did take over France along with the Netherlands and Belgium, until this achievement by Hitler; the U.S had stayed out of the foreign problems. The reason for this was because of the Neutrality Acts of 1935, 1936, and 1937, which sole purpose was to prevent America from being sucked in another like in WW1. With the fall of France it was a turning point of American foreign policy, because when France was taken over it shocked the Americans because France was powerful and it proved that Germany was getting to the point of getting too powerful. The Americans feared that Britain could be taken over, which would allow Hitler to have workshops, shipyards, and slave labor of Western Europe. On June 1941 Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, and decided to seize the oil and other resources the Soviet Union. Roosevelt then provided assistance by providing some military supplies. He did this through the Lend-Lease Bill 1776; it allowed Americans to sell unlimited supplies of firearms to any nations defending itself against the “axis powers” (Cohen 792). It was turning point because even though the U.S wasn’t officially involved in the affair between the invasion of the soviet union, “its very nature, of the Lend-Lease Bill marked the abandonment of any pretense of neutrality” (Cohen 792). The attack on Pearl Harbor was a major turning point in the war because the Japanese had launched an attack on ships in Hawaii. The reason was because the U.S had placed an embargo on Japanese goods. Then the State department insisted that the Japanese leave China, which the they were not going to do because they had a bitter war against the Chinese for more than 4 years, and they refused to leave even more when the U.S asked. This caused a retaliation which led to Pearl Harbor, it led to the United States involvement in the war.

The Neutrality Act did affect the traditional policy of freedom of the seas.

The Neutrality Act was passed by congress in 1935-37, which stated that when, the president proclaimed the existence of a foreign war, certain restriction would then be place. Then it was made to the point where no American could legally sail on a belligerent ship, nor could they sell or transport fire power to a belligerent or make loans to a belligerent. That would go against the freedom of the seas, which Americans had fought two wars for. But the Neutrality Act had placed limits on that but making it to the point where no American can do anything overseas.

If I had been there in the time of the 1940s and had to choose between the Committee to defend America by aiding allies or the America First Committee, I would have choose the Committee to defend America by aiding allies.

The Committee to defend America by Aiding Allies was a group that was in favor of providing assistance to Britain in their time of need. They also made propaganda poster to help get supported for helping Britain. Then the America First Committee did not want America were determined to not shed blood at all cost. They felt that America should put its focus on what strength they had on its defense on the shores. I would have supported the Committee to defend America by aiding allies, because Britain needed help, and Germany was getting stronger. If the Germans had invaded Britain, they would have won and they would have gotten to the point of being unstoppable.

4. The recognition of the Soviet Union was an action that Roosevelt took in 1933. Roosevelt was motivated by the hopes that America would be able to trade with Soviet Russia. He was also motivated by the desire to have the Soviet Union as a friendly counter weight to the possible threat of German power in Europe and Japanese power in Asia.

Then another foreign policy that showed the domestic politics was the Good Neighbor policy. The U.S was giving up its ambition of becoming a world power and would content itself. The U.S wanted to be a regional power. With dictators taking over in Europe and Asia, America was in need of Latin American countries to help them defend the western hemisphere. Having allies in Latin America helped the U.S by making them have more defense in the western hemisphere. The extension of the independence to the Philippines was only in favor the U.S rather than the Philippines. The act that provided the Philippines independence after a twelve year period was the Tydings-Mc Duff act in 1934. But the Americans were not really giving them freedom, because all that they were concerned with was that the islands were a liability. All theses foreign policies were in favored by the U.S or a smart decision by the U.S.

5. Background: During the time period of 1933-1941, Germany was taking over most of Europe. The U.S had pass acts specifically not to involve the U.S in another war. But eventually they had to get involved. Topic 1: Specific laws passed that took the country from neutrality to war.Topic 2: The reason as to why Roosevelt went from isolationist to interventionism in the european war. Topic 3: Why wasn't Roosevelt more candid about what he was doing. Topic 4: I don't think he purposely got involved in the war. Thesis: Roosevelt had a lot of reason as to why he didn't the public about what he did and the reason he got involved in the european war.

Topic 1: Specific laws passed that took the country from neutrality to war.Neutrality Act of 1939 This act allowed european nations to buy munitions from the U.S , but only if they had cash,it was known as cash carry. The U.S wanted to avoid war debts. The act hurt China. This act was in favor of the European democracies. Lend-Lease Bill 1776 This allowed America to sell unlimited supplies of arms to any nation defending itself against the axis power. Topic 2: The reason as to why Roosevelt went from isolationist to interventionism in the european war.Germany invaded the soviet union.Roosevelt provided help to them with military supplies. Britain needed help to help fend off Germany. Hitler would have workshops, shipyards , and slave labor. France fell to Germany and this frightened many people. Topic 3: Why wasn't Roosevelt more candid about what he was doing. The People didn't want the U.S to go into war There were many acts passed to keep the U.S out of war. Topic 4: I don't think he purposely got involved in the war. France fell to Germany. Britain needed help. Pearl harbor

7. Thesis: The U.S policies had provoked war with Japan and could have taken certain action to delay the war with Japan.

The U.S have had provoked the war with Japan by placing an embargo on Japanese goods. Then they state officials had told japan to leave China. The Japanese refused to leave because they had been at war with china for 4 years. Then the Lend-Lease Bill also provoked war ,because it allowed the U.S to sell weapons to other nations that were fighting off german or Japanese power. If America had not placed an embargo on Japan maybe they would have not retaliated.
