UNEARTHING

Data can be obtained either

by OBSERVATION or by EXPERIMENTATION.

What Kind of Data-to Collect and How to Collect Data

Depending on the research theme or course of study

in the social sciences, psychology, marketing, communications and other similar disciplines, data gathering made possible through observing, surveying, and interviewing.

- Calls for description of people's attitudes or feelings about a certain issue.

OBSERVATION

- The action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information.

OBSERVATION

- Means the observed group is aware of the presence of the researcher and that their behavior is being observed

OVERT OBSERVATION

- Means the participants are not aware of the presence of the researcher and their behavior is being observed

COVERT OBSERVATION

GUIDE QUESTIONS IN DETERMINING WHAT PARTICULAR INFORMATION SHOULD BE TAKEN FROM THOSE PARTICIPANTS.

1. What information are you looking for based on your observation?

2. Who will be included in this observation?

3. In what particular situation would you consider doing the observation?

4. When is the best time to conduct the observation?

5. Where do you want the observation to take place?

6. How are you going to document these observations?7. Who will be the most trustworthy people to carry out the observation?

- Questionnaires and survey forms must contain questions or queries raised in a straightforward manner and are as concise as possible such that the target information would easily be obtained.

SURVEY/INTERVIEW

- ______ must be 5-10 minutes only.

- At this stage, you must have already identified who the interviewees or subjects will be and how many.

SURVEY/INTERVIEW

METHODS OF ADMINISTERING A SURVEY

Administering a survey calls for a more systematic way in order to achieve the aims of a certain survey conducted

- This involves the person himself/herself conducting the survey.

PERSONAL APPROACH

- The interview is set personally and the people involved face each other in order to gather the necessary information.

- Questions on the survey are asked directly to the respondent by the researcher.

FACE-TO-FACE STRUCTURED INTERVIEW

- The survey is done using telephone or cellular phones.

- The calls are made to ask individuals particular questions.

- This method can be used for asking consequential questions.

TELEPHONE SURVEY

- Also called internet survey

ONLINE SURVEY

- is one of the most famous sources of data collection, where a set of survey questions is sent out to respondents and the members of this sample can respond to the questions over the internet.

- Respondents receive ____ in various ways such as email, embedded over website, social media or forms.

ONLINE SURVEY

- A ______ is an act of presenting your academic work to a panel or committee of professors and other involved scholars.

- The arguments presented during the ______ are to ascertain that you have understood the course and your selected topic.

THESIS DEFENSE

- The ______ is designed so that faculty members can ask questions and make sure that students actually understand their field and focus area.

DEFENSE

- The questions are usually open-ended and require the student to think critically about their work.

THESIS DEFENSE

- Giving a talk is another mode of communicating the results of your research project.

THESIS DEFENSE

DEFENDING YOUR STUDY MEANS BEING ABLE TO DO THE FOLLOWING: (SJCPMDTWAIT)

1. Substantiate the need to carry out the study based on your research problem;

2. Justify your approach or chosen methodology to meet your objectives;

3. Clearly explain your findings, with the aid of tables and graphs;

4. Provide a rational conclusion; and

5. Map out a plan of action leading to a new directions

6. During the defense, the presenter discusses his or her study before a committee and with the aid of a PowerPoint presentation within a time limit.

7. The members of the committee shall then discuss your findings and presentation among themselves and decide if your study merits approval and publication

8. When the deliberation is finished, the chair of the committee will call on the presenter back and inform him or her of the results of the deliberation.

9. A summary of comments, recommendations, and suggestions is formally written and shall be conveyed to you for appropriate action.

10. In most cases, the manuscriptwould need revisions based on the committee's comments, recommendations, and suggestions.

11. The revised manuscript is then submitted to the committee members. If they unanimously approve the manuscript, it now ready for dissemination.

- A ____ is usually delivered at technical or working conferences, Symposium, or meetings.

TALK

- In the academe, a thesis or dissertation is defended before a committee or 10 panel as a requirement for graduation.

..

THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WILL HELP YOU PREPARE FOR AN ORAL PRESENTATION ESPECIALLY BEFORE AN EVALUATION COMMITTEE:

1. Know your audience, if you are to deliver a talk in a technical conference, symposium, or meeting, you can expect that your experience is also knowledgeable in the field and active in. pursuing research, and therefore, using technical terms will not be a problem. But if you are to address a general audience, use layman's language and focus on practical applications and the relevance of your study

2. Develop a catchy title to arouse the reader's interest.

3. Oranize your presentation. Do your homework and anticipate the questions that may be asked in the meeting.

8. Dress appropriately.

9. Answer the questions raised by your audience to the best of your ability.

CREATING A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION FOR DEFENSE OF WRITTEN RESEARCH PAPER

• The first slide must show the title of your presentation with a subtitle that includes your name and current affiliation including your e-mail address.

• On the succeeding slides, you can change the layout of each slide including the color scheme by clicking layout or design, respectively.

• You only need to type in the information you want to include in the presentation that you think would be helpful in stressing your ideas.

- When delivering a talk or an oral presentation, you engage your audience in your "story," which is meant not only to inform but to ____

INSPIRE (Wei, 2007).

- Moreover, an oral presentation allows you to highlight the accomplishments of your research work to your audience (Pugsley, 2010).

.

______ is a computer program that facilitates oral presentations

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT
