What are 2 classifications of bone marrow response?
Bone marrow responds to a decrease in RBCs by increasing production of new blood cells. (Regenerative). Could be in response to blood loss anemia and immune mediated hemolytic anemia to name a few.Bone marrow responds inadequately to the need for RBCs. ( Non regenerative). Could be in response to nutritional deficiencies or chronic diseases.
Define Discocyte.
RBCs with a discoid shape that are normally seen in dogs. Seen in healthy nonanemic dogs and cats.
What kind of RBC is pictured?
Poikilocytes
Define Agglutination
when an antibody coats the erythrocyte causing bridging and clumping. Seen in immune mediated hemolytic anemia.
What is a cause of Heinz Bodies?
It denatured hemoglobin caused by certain oxidant drugs, up to 5% normal in cats. Can be found in patients with liver disease.
What are the three things that describe RBC morphology?
Shape, size and color.
What are two other names for target cells?
Leptocyte and codocyte
Define hypochromia and what causes it.
Hypochromia refers to a decreased MCHC and is most often associated with an iron deficiency.
What is the normal size of a canine RBC?
7-10 microns
Define anisocytosis.
Variation in RBC size.
What are the general situations that result in anemia?
Things that can result in anemia are blood loss, lack of iron and lack of blood cell production.
What is occurring in this image?
Rouleaux- RBC's are stacking.
What kind of RBC is the arrow pointing at?
Nucleated RBC
What are Howell Jolly Bodies?
Nuclear remnants in young erythrocytes in response to anemia, they are removed by the spleen. Can be due to spleen atophy.
Spiculated cells with evenly spaced blunt to sharp surface projections with the same shape and size.
Ecchinocyte
Define crenation.
Changes from disc to sphere shape in RBCs, results from pH change due to slow drying of blood films. Can be associated with kidney disease.
A erythrocyte with oval shaped central pallor.
Stomatocyte
The most indicative cell type for Auto Immune Hemoytic Anemia is
Spherocytes
What kind of RBC's are tear shaped?
Dacrocytes
Fragments of RBCs from shearing of RBCs by intravascular trauma.
Schistocyte (shizocyte)-
