colonies
Lands that are controlled by another nation.
conquistadors
The Spanish soldiers, explorers, and fortune hunters who took part in the conquest of the Americas in the 16th century.
Cabral
Portuguese explorer who claimed the shores of modern-day Brazil for his country in 1500.
Magellan
Portuguese explorer who led an exploration in 1519 which sailed around the entire world. After reaching the Philippines, he became involved in a local war and was killed.
Cortes
A Spaniard and conquistador who led the other Spanish explorers to the conquering of the Aztec Empire in 1521.
Pizarro
Conquistador who led other Spaniards to the conquering of the Inca Empire in 1532. HIs force crushed the Inca force and kidnapped the Inca ruler.
Atahualpa
The Inca ruler who commanded a force of about 30,000. After being kidnapped by the Spaniards, he offered plenty of gold and silver to them. The Spaniards accepted the offering before strangling him.

-believed he was an armor-clad god

What three factors led to the conquest of the Aztecs?
1. Superior weaponry
-Spaniards had muskets and cannons
-Aztecs had arrows

2. Help from natives
-Malinche told Cortes about what caused natives to resent Aztecs
-harsh punishments
-human sacrifice

3. Disease
-Europeans were immune to diseases as a result of exposure
-Native Americans had no natural immunity
-many died which caused the Aztec population to decrease
How did Pizarro subdue the Inca?
-crushed force
-kidnapped and strangled leader
By what percentage did the native population decrease between 1519 and 1605?
About 86% decrease.
