The purpose of close order drill is to enable the commander to: (5)

-PROVIDE simple formations from which combat formations may be readily assumed.

-INCREASE the confidence of his junior officers and of his non commissioned officers through the exercise of command, by giving the proper commands and the control of drilling troops.

Define Element
An individual, squad, section, platoon, company, or other unit which is PART OF A LARGER UNIT.
Define Formation
An ARRANGEMENT of elements in a line, in column, or in any other prescribed manner.
Define Line
-A FORMATION in which the ELEMENTS ARE ABREAST, except that a section or platoon is in line when it;s squads are in line and one behind the other.
Define Rank
A line of Marines or vehicles placed side by side.
Define; column
A FORMATION in which elements are placed ONE BEHIND THE OTHER, except that a section or platoon is in column when its squads are in column and abreast of each other.
Define: file
A single column of Marines or vehicles one behind the other.
Define: Flank
The right or left extremity of a unit either on line or in column. The element on the extreme right or left of the line. A direction at a RIGHT angle to the direction an element of a formation is facing.

Define "guide"
The individual upon whom a formation, or other elements, thereof, regulates its march. "To guide" means to regulate the intervals, direction, alignment, and cadence on a base file. (right, left, or center).
Define "center"
The middle element of a formation within an odd number of elements or the LEFT center element of a formation with an even number of elements.
Define "Pace"
The length of a full step at quick time, which is 30 inches and is measured from the back of one heel to the back of the other heel.
Define step ( right and left, half and back, quick, and double time
-The distance from heel to heel between the feet of a march man.
-RIGHT AND LEFT STEP are 12 inches
-HALF AND BACK STEP are 15 inches
-QUICK AND DOUBLE are 30 and 36 inches respectively.
Define "cadence"
-Slow time, quick time, and double time
-A rhythmic rate of march at a uniform step
Define "voice control"
-The voice is controlled by opening the THROAT, using the MOUTH to shape the words, and using the DIAPRAGM to control the volume.
-The loudness of commands is adjusted to the number of men in the unit
-Only give commands in the position of attention.
-The most important muscle is the DIAPHRAGM
-The THROAT, MOUTH, and NOSE act as amplifiers and help give fullness and projection to the voice.
Define "distinctness"
-Commands can be pronounced correctly WITHOUT LOSS OF EFFECT
-Distinctness depends on the correct use of your TONGUE, LIPS, AND TEETH which form the separate sounds of a word.
-Practice giving clear, distinct commands by giving them slowly and carefully, prolonging the syllables. Gradually increase your rate of delivery until you develop the proper cadence, while continuing to enunciate each syllable distinctly.
Define "inflection"
-Rise and fall in pitch and tone in the voice.
Explain "cadence"
-Uniform and rhythmic flow in words
-Necessary so everyone in the unit will be able to understand the PREPARATORY command and know when to expect the COMMAND OF EXECUTION.
-The best interval on the march is that which allows ONE STEP to be taken between the preparatory command and the command of execution (except when supplementary commands need to be given)

-Consists of four men
-2 non commissioned officers are the color bearers, and two other men, junior to the color bearer, are the color guards.
-The color bearers are unarmed, but the color bearer carries the national colors and commands the color guard; the necessary commands for movements and rendering honors.
-The junior color bearer carries the organizational colors, which is always on the LEFT of the national colors.
-When only the national color is carried, the color guard will include only one color bearer

-Party thrown for a newly promoted staff NCO or officer to celebrate his new rank.
-Not an initiation or hazing
-Held soon after promotion, WITHIN A MONTH
-Usually held at Staff NCO club
-Amount spent is normally one months pay raise
-Guests are usually fellow Marines of equal or greater rank.
-The warrant is displayed prominently.
-In the past, the warrant was doused with alcohol, giving the name "Wet down"
Explain Hail and Farewell
-Introducing new SNCO's and saying goodbye to any SNCO's that are leaving.
-Can be scheduled perodically, monthly or quarterly; or on a case-by-case basis.
-Can be schedules to coincide with SNCO's call.
-Often given at SNCO's club
-HAILS are brief introductions of newly arrived SNCO's with comments on where they will be coming from and where they'll be working.
-FAIRWELLS- present a plaque, other attendants should pay for meal, each Marine should should make comments on the Marine leaving.

Explain Promotions and Reenlistments:

What are the commands during formation?
-Required ceremonies to recognize milestones in a Marines career.
-First, the time, date, and location for the ceremony must be made and information passed.
-The size of unit and space available determines close or normal intervals
-The individual recognized will form up in the rear of the formation.(one rank behind the formation)
-They form up based on precedence; personal awards first, promotions second, reenlistments third.

-Commanding Officer: "Post"; the senior enlisted marches direct route to the LEFT of the CO.
-Senior enlisted: "Personnel to receive Awards, Promotion, etc, Center"; (Marines execute a right face) "March" They march to a position in front of the formation approx. 5 paces in front and centered on the commander.
-Senior enlisted: "Mark time march" "Detail halt" Right face" "Hand salute" (after the commander returns the salute) "Ready Two"
-Designated Marine will read the order and citation.
-Commander will hand or attach the award, congratulate with a hand shake.
-Immediately after the promoted will salute the senior officer.
-The commander returns the salute and proceeds to the next person
-After shaking hands with the last person, the commander and senior enlisted return to their post.
-Once the commander is in position, the senior Marine of the detail will give the command "Hand Salute" (CO returns the salute) "Ready Two" "Left Face" "Forward March" Most direct march to the rear of the formation.
Discuss "Dining In"
Commanding officer desires to conduct a formal dinner in honor of:
-recognizing a new member to the unit
-saying farewell to a departing member
-for a dignitary
-individual or unit achievement
-or for members of a command to get more acquainted.

-Guidelines for Mess night are adhered to but attire may be adjusted
-Spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, and non military may attend; attendance of these individuals makes this a dining in, rather than a mess night. (Mess night is a stag affair; meaning non-military are not invited unless they are being recognized)
-Ideally, the guest of honor should be a couple that has jointly contributed to the nation.
-Care must be taken not to place a lady at the end of the table.
Discuss "Marine Corps Birthday"
-Rules based on posts Commanded by a general officer, at posts where there is none, the senior line officer will follow procedures outlined for the commanding general.
-Rehearsal must be conducted
-Two officers and enlisted personnel of each rank will be assigned to the escort
-Dress uniform will be worn; evening dress or blue dress
-The birthday cake will be mounted on a mess serving cart or similar conveyance covered with CSARLET or GOLD bunting
-Where swords are not available, escorts will execute hand salutes at appropriate commands.
Discuss "Relief and appointment"
-Ceremony held upon relief of the old, and appointment of the new Sergeant Major with units of battalion or squadron size or larger.
-May be a small formation or a parade. (Indication for a parade is the old Sergeant Major is retiring)
