Clearing Intersections

Why? Keeps you alive at intersections

Look left, right then back left scan ahead for PBMV pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles and vehicles. When going through the intersection check my opposite traffic side mirror to make sure I cleared intersection of any hazards

When stopped in traffic

Why Have escape route

Leave enough space between my front bumper and vehicle aheads rear bumper in case that vehicle becomes disabled I can go around safely without backing. Longer my truck the more space I need

Four to six second following time for speed up to 30 MPH, 6-8 seconds for speeds over 30 MPH

WHY buys time

My following distance in seconds which gives me time to react to traffic conditions as they change ahead

Eight to twelve seconds eye-lead time

Why Centers car in traffic lane

Depth of what my eyes should be most of the time while driving. Must maintain a depth of vision. Pick a stationary item in front and start counting until my vehicle reaches item

Count one two three after vehicle ahead has started to move

Why Keeps you away from billboards

This establishes a space cushion and allows me to bring my eye to driving scene ahead of me

Stale green lights

Why smooth stops and turns

A decision point must be established between my front bumper and the stop line if the light should change before reaching my decision point. I can stop car safely behind stop line If I reach decision point then light changes I will continue through intersection without hesitation or acceleration. Best to pick stationary item inside of road

Scan steering wheels

Why. Take path of least resistance

Occupied vehicles present two hazards person may exit car or pull away from curb. Also check for turn signals, taillights or exhaust. You your horn if unsure

Pulling from curb

Why? Communicate in traffic, horn, lights, signals

Turn on traffic side signal check traffic side mirrors look over traffic side shoulder (look don’t glance) blind spot between gas tank and drive axle when lane is clear proceed to pull away

Eye contact

Why. Establishes eye to eye contact

We use 3 tools to establish eye contact. Horn, lights and signals. Once eye contact is established I can expect otherdriver to act unreasonable manor

Use of mirrors and gauges

Why. Keeps eyes ahead of car

Check mirrors every 5-8 seconds. Substitute mirrors for primary gauge check when traffic allows. Never go mirror to mirror, mirror to gauge gauge to gauge always mirror front or gauge front
