Analysis Of Jenny Lyn Bader And Larger Than Life

Being born in a world without a plan of the direction your life should go, it’s only fitting you find someone that resembles your ideal dreams and mimic their life. People we look up to are our role models or modern day heroes because they’re relatable, they give us an idea of how our future should look and the path we should follow. Both articles “What Makes Superman So Darned American?” by Gary Engle and “Larger Than Life” by Jenny Lyn Bader give insight on their idea of role models or heroes. Bader focuses on explaining why a more realistic role model such as, the people around us that go through real situations with consequences is better. Opposing to Engle’s idea of mythical super heroes such as cowboys and superman. Though they have …show more content…
Bader describes role models as the people around us like our parents, grandparents, the cast members of Beverly Hills 90210, someone who is able to go on talk shows, or even host them, etc. Bader gives a lot of examples on what a role model should do and what they should not do. Bader states “Role models are admirable individuals who haven’t given up their lives and livelihoods and may even have a few hangups…They are therefore more likely than heroes to be free for lunch , and they are oftener still alive.” Bader states some valid points as to why heroes are not influential or beneficial to society. She states “Heroes don’t have the luxury of staff writers… Hercules can’t go on Nightline and pledge to stop taking steroids… Prometheus can’t get a presidential pardon” ( Bader 1). She goes on to state the difference between a role model and a hero. “While a hero might be a courageous head of state, a saint, a leader of armies, a role model might be someone who put in a three day presidential bid, your local minister, your boss. They don’t need their planes to go down in flames to earn respect. Role models have a job, accomplishment, or hairstyle worth emulating... They don’t go on hunger strikes; they diet ” ( Bader 1/2). Bader discusses an informal poll she took and came up with the conclusion that people replaced impersonal heroes with most personal role models. This elaborates …show more content…
Engle states “... a medium intimately connected with immigrant culture, there simply was no image that presented a blending of identities in the assimilation process in a way that stressed pride, self, confidence, integrity, and psychological well- being. None, that is, until Superman” (Engle 7). Superman’s persona is comforting because it has become relatable. In contrast Bader ends her claim with a story of one of her colleagues, who when asked for her heroes told the story of her great grandmother. “A woman whose husband left her with three kids in Galicia, near Poland, and went to the United States ….When she made it to America, her husband soon died, and she supported her family”( Bader 3) Bader adds this to elucidate a hero doesn’t necessarily have to save someone from a burning building or save the planet, for them to be highly esteemed. Simply doing something that someone can benefit or learn from later in the future or something that can inspire someone, will make you a role

In Reynold’s Price famous “Hero of Our Times” speech he says that, “Our need for heroes is at least as old as our need for enemies.” Even before Greek myths, there were boundaries and expectations because without enemies there wouldn’t be a need for heroes. To be an American hero in the twentieth century is a matter of perspective. In my perspective, to be an American hero in the twentieth century means that one must be a model to aspire others, sacrifice something of meaning for the greater good, and should be willing to “answer the call”.…

Many Heroes accomplish great tasks and exemplify determination when completing such tasks. Being a hero involves showing determination, a person can’t do anything if they aren’t determined to do what they want to do. For instance, Frederick Douglass rose above from his fellow slaves/segregated african americans and attempted to make a difference. He knew the consequent would be going back to slavery, which for him was worse than death. According to Frederick Douglass’s autobiography which explains how he rose above his fears to make a difference, it states,” ...…

In a universe filled with memories, cries, love, hate, and many more, it is also filled with many different types of people that wander throughout the world today. However, there are other different types of people today but are known for being the same thing, and those people are called heroes . A vast majority of people see a hero as someone who saves people’s lives by destroying the evil villain, but that is not necessarily the case. Many people throughout the world have made history in a way no one else really could. Those people have changed the lives of many people in society by influencing them to make their lives better or by knowing what choices are the right ones to make.…

Though hero may have a definition in dictionaries, its true meaning is something that conjures many different views. Consequently, there is a seemingly infinite list of people who could be called heroes — whether they be pop stars, athletes, rappers, or actors. Despite a plurality of divergences, many of them have one unifying characteristic: they are famous. Often, however, true heroes are those whose actions go unsung; they are ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary feats. Atticus Finch, a creation of Harper Lee’s…

Countless people look up to a role model for guidance throughout the course of life. In fact, Merriam-Webster defines the term role model as “someone whom other people admire and try to be like.” However, the stoic words in dictionaries often fail to encompass the whole meaning of an expression. A role model is not simply someone whom other people aspire to imitate but is someone who helps other people become better than himself regarding a specific set of skills. Jack Jackson, my teammate and friend, is my role model since he has helped me become even better than he with respect to several skills: work ethic, motivation, and humility.…

“In short, heroism means doing the right thing, regardless of the consequences”- (Unknown Author.) A hero is a figure that someone looks up to; today people look up to the celebrities of the world. However, is this actually who society should be looking up to? Celebrities, like Kim Kardashian, don’t particularly give a decent example of how people should act. When she publicly says and means things like, “I hate when woman wear the wrong foundation colour, it might be the worst thing on the planet” it should make society question their fascination with such superficiality.…

It is true that the best way to understand society is to examine the people they choose as their heroes or role models, no matter what type of hero one considers, whether it is someone universally admired or someone who is supported by only a certain group. Heroes and role models reflect what society believes to be ideal, and even if that hero is not really what they are shown to be in the media, society picks someone based on the image they see. Acknowledging that ideal picture, even if it is fake, is important to understanding the community. One such example is the current president of the United States, President Trump. His election in 2016 was unexpected, because a large portion of America forgot to consider the feelings of his voting base, who believe that their issues are not currently addressed by the governing bodies.…

When someone hears or reads the word “hero” people tend to start with the thought of a super hero, such as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Captain America and countless other super heroes. That is fine except you are thinking of super heroes. True heroes don’t have any special ability. This is pointed out quite clearly in Robert Ray’s “The Thematic Paradigm.” Ray also argues that movie heroes that are from an American background can be classified as either official heroes, outlaw heroes, or a combination of the two; this is known as a reluctant hero.…
