These are a few examples as to what workplace violence can consist of. Many people may confuse workplace harassment as workplace violence. Workplace harassment is can consist of the following: 1) shouting, swearing, or verbally abusing an employee, 2) language or actions that embarrass or humiliate an employee and or 3)an unwelcomed sexual innuendos made to an employee (Stop Bullying, Harassment, and Anti-Bully in School/Work, 2013). The warning signs stated above must be remembered. Offering counseling to employees is a point that is most often overlooked. In a stressed environment or situation, people react rashly. In other words, an employee who is about to lose their job or become a product of downsizing should be offered counseling to help with the transition. A large amount of employees depend on their income to survive; therefore, losing everything or taking a pay cut can be traumatic and result in workplace violence. Another point, employees may be going through a life changing situation at home that may cause them to act irrationally. To me, it seems like people have a hard time dealing with difficult situations and a number of times those situations end with an individual causing harm or even death to another and them to himself. Not to mention, training employees on workplace violence is key. To add, educating employees on workplace violence, warning signs, policies, and what to do in the case of workplace harassment, potential violence, or what to do if workplace violence is occurring is important for the safety of everyone.
