Women Studies Reflection

This course had impacted my thinking around a variety of issues. Being educated on the oppression of women is important. It is important for everyone to be educated on the oppression women are faced with today and in the past. Gender is a social construct designed to keep males superior and women inferior. Women 's studies give others the intersectional lens that one need to move towards the liberation for women all around the world. Women studies are essential because it reveals and analyses sex, gender sexualities, and race and class in cultural perspectives. Women studies introduce one to the diversity of feminism. Women studies help one identify how interlocked gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, class and sexuality are. Women studies have made me more aware that gender is a social construct and the ideologies of gender and sexuality arise from western notions and vary from culture to culture. I can now better identify the masculinity bias that is embedded in the institutions, and how social institution (family, school, religion, language and media) reiterate gender as a social construction. One can now challenge the traditional norms and roles that have been given to us. One can now realize the patriarchal dominace of society and how it has oppressed women. I now realize how important it is to have an intersectional lens. To acknowledge the multiple aspects of identity that enrich our lives and experiences and that compound and complicate oppressions and marginalization .One can now have and intersectional lens and approach topics in a non-bias way of …show more content…
Why haven’t I taken notice to issues, mostly women 's issues before attending Spelman? Opportunities that Spelman have presented me with, have given me options that I am considering and have been a big influence on my perceptions and views on women 's issues. I currently know that I am interested in women’s study. Before taking women’s study at Spelman I was very unconscious about feminism and the oppression that women face every day. Women studies has open my horizon and broadened my view on women 's issues. I now see how sexuality and gender affects our society. I have been attentive about the racial issues in our society and how it affects African Americans; however, now I am conscious about sexism and how it affects women everywhere. Through my studies I 've learned how African American women have been secondary to men and the stories that are being told often times forget about the women. I am more aware and willing to learn and try to educate members in my family and friends about the information I have learned in class. I’ve noticed how my conversations have become more political and I am talking more about deeper issues that I’ve never talked about or discussed with friends
