Eyes represents as a sign of love, change in relationship and hatred, in Ferdaus’ story on almost every page. During the interactive oral, we discussed about “Woman at Point Zero” by Nawal El Saadawi published in 1975, which we argue about whether Ferdaus’ mother’s eyes, representation of person’s personality, considers as a sign of comfort and love or fear and death. After interactive oral, I understand now that she states her mother’s eyes as being “two rings of intense white around two circles of intense black”(18), which she feels comfort through these eyes and makes a connection with these eyes throughout the story when she describes other people’s eyes and on the other hand, if a person she meets doesn’t have the same eyes as her mother, they scares her and these kinds of eyes represents ferdaus’ fear and hatred of society. It is hard to believe and understand why some people are placed in such terrible situations, like Firdaus, but it is important to try and see the culture before judging. Political issues, the concept of Egypt being highly religious and embodies the political unrest in Egypt; resistant to authority, helped me to further my knowledge on understanding how all men, during that time period, that Ferdaus’ meets throughout her life were nice to her at the beginning, but then they changed and when FGM takes her power, men continue to ask her about pleasure, which basically they just tried to mock her.
