“You 're hindering Ralph. You 're not letting him get to the most important thing.” This quote reveals how Piggy is able to see what needs to be done. He follows the rules and is exceedingly smart. “I got the conch! Just you listen! The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down there by the beach. It wasn 't half cold down there in the night. But the first time Ralph says 'fire ' you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain. Like a pack of kids!”- Before he scolded the other kids for not listening and now he steps in to set things in order so things can get done. Piggy takes charge and orders the little kids to listen so that they don’t behave like “a pack of kids”. “You didn 't ought to have let that fire out. You said you 'd keep the smoke going—” Unlike before when he scolded the little kids, now he confronts Jack about what Jack did wrong. Piggy backed up his argument with some of Jack’s previous words. Piggy is smart and he uses this to his advantage to keep Jack in his place. Piggy’s tone also helps get the younger kids against Jack and if the younger kids isolate Jack then Jack might see it as a punishment for letting the fire go out. Jack realizes what he did wrong. For example, in the story Ralph jumps into action quickly. After gaining consciousness, he begins to call everyone together and he orders Piggy to collect everyone’s name. Even though everyone is frazzled and scared Ralph stays calm and begins to take on his role as leader. Economy says “They understand that in certain situations, difficult and timely decisions must be made in the best interests of the entire organization” (Economy). Ralph does this by making decisions when he is faced with a difficult situation. He brings everyone together and begins to do what he thinks would be most helpful for everyone. Just like Economy’s thought that leadership is being able to make wise decisions in difficult situations, in her article “23 Traits of Good Leaders“ Farrell explains that leaders are able to focus on where they are going and they are able to persuade people to follow them. Ralph does this when he makes a fire so that they have a chance at getting rescued. Ralph explained to the other kids that the only way they would get off the island is if someone came and rescued them. He told them that the fire would serve as a signal to any passing ships or planes. Farrell says “Focus. Know where you 're going and have a strong stated mission to lead people on” (Farrell).
