During the 1920s women 's’ roles in society changed starting with women’s right to vote. The 19th amendment was added to the constitution in 1920. This created the new era of women along with the new technologies freeing up time. One of the most iconic symbols of the era was the flapper. It discarded most of the things that was considered ladylike.
During the 1920s the average American had extra money so they began to spend it on consumer goods like premade clothes and appliances. One of the most important consumer good of the 1920s was the automobile. The combination of cheap prices and credit allowed most people to get a car. While some freedoms were arising others were being taken away. With the passing of the 18th amendment the production and distribution of alcohol became illegal. Because of this the country’s gang related crimes grew and new secrete drinking spots called speakeasies started to pop-up everywhere.
Also during the 1920s there were a lot of racial tensions. With growing African-American culture because of jazz and the Harlem Renaissance caused discomfort among some white Americans. To combat this millions of white Americans joined the Ku Klux Klan. They believed it represented all the values the “Roaring Twenties” were destroying.
