No matter when I observed the weight room, there were always more males than females. At twelve o clock in the afternoon on a Wednesday, I counted 53 people in the gym and 40 were male. Because of a majority of the weight room being males I picked up more signs from the men. At five o’clock on a Monday, watching their facial expressions, how hard they pushed themselves, whether they worked out when it was crowded or not, all helped me understand more. Men pushed themselves hard especially if they noticed females watching. They would add more weight than it seemed they could do to show the women their strength. In general, girls enjoy wearing their gym clothes because they feel more comfortable and typically want to impress boys. Girls also might like wearing gym clothes because it can show what kind of physical shape they are in. At six o’clock on Monday, I noticed some girls that were running on the treadmills were also watching some guys work out and when one of the guys went to go the water fountain one of them would try to beat him there. It was clear she would try to make it a coincident but it was far from that. She would flirt with the guy for a bit then went back to her treadmill. Once that same guy was about to leave, she noticed and left right before him. Her friends that were running on the treadmills next to her did the same thing. One of them stayed for only five minutes. The girls running on the treadmills would run at a slow pace and would continuously wipe off any sweat that dripped down their face. They would also constantly fix their hair if it came out of place. Not all the girls who went to the gym were doing this. Some girls would not care to fix their hair and would not care if they sweat. They did not care about their presence to the rest of the members in the gym, they only wanted to work out for themselves. However, not all girls ran on the treadmills. I counted four girls who came to the gym during my times of observations that did not go to the treadmill, but instead to the weights where all
