Fantasy as we know it today is by far the most difficult of all the genres to pinpoint a clear definition. In the book A Critical Handbook of Children’s Literature 9th Edition, it is defined to “depict a world unlike the one we usually call real.” (Lukens, Smith, Coffel, 2013) and others have define it has magical or dreamlike places. No matter how you define it the goal of Fantasy is to take readers away from the normalcy of everyday life and has long done so through every society known today. Unfortunately, his mother is tired of his tricks, and sends him to bed without any supper. But suddenly a forest grows in his bedroom and Max is taken away to a land of Wild Things. Fortunately, the Wild Things do not eat Max; instead they make him their king. Max is allowed to continue his misbehaviors and actually encouraged to do so. It seems like a wonderful and perfect scenario…until something calls him home. The characters and setting of this book make it an excellent example of High Fantasy. Max’s bedroom turns into a magical place where he becomes king of the monsters that lived there. Starkey. This fantasy story is a magical encounter that takes place at the edge of the ocean. A prince and a young lady are suddenly swept away with one another, but they only have a few days to discover if this love is really what they need for a lifetime. They both will have to make some drastic changes and live outside the world they know. This is the first of five short stories in the book Spellbound. It grabs the interest and continues to capture young readers’ attention until the end. It will also encourage young adults to keep reading as they are great reads, but are a little shorter than most novels. The story is a twist on the classic fairy tale of the Little Mermaid, but this time the young man is the merman and the young lady is the human desperate to fall in love, but with a great deal of sacrifices. The underworld is an example of the science fiction, because the setting is Earth and in the ocean that you can only get to through a hidden portal. The characters are very much like any other teenagers so the story is believable to a certain point, but then the reader must once again give up the idea of believing life on Earth is the only life
