Have you ever heard of the phrase, “ don't do things to others that you wouldn't want upon yourself”? That is exact attitude that should go towards animals when we test on them. We put animals in laboratories and perform tests on them that we would never dream of, or even allow doing on humans. Animal testing should be made illegal for our safety and to spare animals the pain that animal testing brings. Animal testing is bad science, dangerous to both humans and animals, and immoral. Animal testing is bad science. According to the food and drug administration ,ninety two percent of drugs that are passed due to animal testing fail humans. For example, mice are commonly used animals for testing pharmaceutical drugs. The invention of the “cancer mouse” in 1988 was shown to be a key to fighting malignant tumours. A cancer mouse would have a human cancer gene inserted in it so it would grow tumors, and help find cures to cancer. However many successful cures they found for the rodents failed in humans(Gericke). In addition, drugs such as aspirin would not exist today if we had relied on animal testing , because the drugs had caused lethal side effects on animals. For example, Penicillin is toxic to guinea pigs and Aspirin is poisonous to cats. Differences between humans and other species can give inadequate and erroneous information when animal data is applied to human diseases and drug responses. The inexact results of animal experiments can endanger humans and animals.
Animal testing is also immoral. There are three common ethical concerns expressed regarding the quality of animal lives during animal testing. Animals should lead natural lives through the use of their natural adaptations and capabilities, should function well in terms of health and behavior , and should feel well and be free of pain and fear. Most scientists have “restricted conceptions of animal welfare that relate to only one concern”(Drummond) . We protect animals due to genetic conservation, environmental integrity , or human virtue, not the quality of their lives. And there is only one
