Some might think that they can manage this win because of their skills; some might believe that it is due to luck, and some psychology members would attribute it to team cohesion. Team cohesion is the dynamic progression which is observed in the tendency for a group to stay together in the hopes of achieving its common goals (Crocker, 2015). This can be divided into task-cohesion and social cohesion. Task-cohesion is the effort members are willing to contribute to reach their team goals, whereas social cohesion is the effort members are willing to contribute for the social approval (Yarmey, 2013). This step consists of the team finally coming together after having putting aside their concerns and discussing their objectives (Mackey, 1999). In the video, the players began using nicknames for their teammates (i.e. sunshine) and making “yo-mama” jokes (AlphaGeneral, 2009). Additionally, they set their goals as a team and paved their way towards victory. Successfully completing this phase lead them to the fourth and final one; performance.
Performance, the final step in team development, is when the team becomes efficient and combines their abilities to increase cohesiveness and achieve their objectives (Mackey, 1999). Taking for example Remember the Titans, not only is it strongly stressed that the opposing team will “remember the Titans” following the game, but they also ended up winning the Virginia State Championship (AlphaGeneral, 2009). As the team increases in cohesiveness, they will show improvement in communication and thus demonstrate better performance (Yarmey, 2013).
Therefore, the review of the videos helped introduce numerous key concepts and relevant theories that influence team cohesion. It is however important to address that team cohesion is fairly complex and consistently fluctuating, as it depends on many combined
