This chapter starts with what culture is. So, what is culture? According to the book, it’s the beliefs, norms, behaviors, and products common to the members of a particular group. Culture is what defines everyone. It creates diversion, different experiences and it makes us all different. Culture can also be expressed through religion, language, stories, poems and music. Culture is then defined even further, it is categorized into, material and nonmaterial culture. Material culture is anything physical that shapes people’s lives. Basically, anything made by humans. For example, illegal immigrants, united states is known for giving opportunities, but we seem to have forgotten when it comes to giving opportunities to people who are not for America. In the end this creates a cultural inconsistency. Which then leads to certain values, beliefs and norm to be doxic, or taken for granted, but we all know that our beliefs, norms and values always change due to our constant environment change, so we can’t jump to a conclusion and describe all these as doxic. So, everyone perceives their own culture, ethnocentrism, is a worldview whereby we judge other cultures by the standards of our own. Culture is also influenced by language, like the book says, “language is thus a key vehicle of culture.” Media also impacts culture, it is growing so much that if we were to stay away from any media exposure, we would not be able to communicate in many ways. Mass media is another vehicle that brings us culture. But, culture also bring class and inequality in many areas. Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has used culture to explain social class reproduction. I agree that culture shapes us and that there are material and nonmaterial cultures. For example, flags, statues, buildings, like the twin towers, it represents something to us. We all have different beliefs, whether right or wrong. And whatever was “true” today may not be tomorrow. Culture changes. I also agreed with how media is linked to culture. Music is one example, like back then classical music was a very popular genre of music but when Jazz came into play, it broke the rule of classical forms, making it part of our culture now. Music tells a story, expresses ideas and offers opinions and shares
