“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are” said E. E. cummings, a poet. This quote relates to the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee because the three people I believe that show courage while growing up are Scout, Jem, and Dill. All three of these characters are young when the story begins and you read about them growing up. As they grow up they show courage in many different ways. I believe that people could learn courage from the characters Scout, Jem, and Dill in the book.
“I could stand anything but a bunch of people looking at me. They were quite still, said Scout.” (page 206) Scout showed courage when her, Jem, and Dill snuck and went to the jail house to find their dad there watching …show more content…
Right when they were about to leave a mob came and Scout, Jem, and Dill ran to the jail house. Scout was talking to Mr. Cunningham about his which ended up with him and the gang leaving, so Scout saved her dad for getting in a fight with the mob. “My fist were clenched and I was ready to let fly. Atticus had promised he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more; I was far too old and too big for such childish things, and the sooner I learned to hold in, the better off everyone would be” Said Scout (page 99). Another time Scout showed courage is when Cecil Jacobs kept saying that her daddy defends niggers and at this point her dad had asked her to not beat people up for saying things about him. She showed courage when she walked away and not causing a fight like Atticus asked. Another time Scout showed courage was on the first day of school, in her first year of school. Walter Cunningham Jr. didn’t have lunch money but Miss Caroline said that she could lend him the money and he would have to pay her back the next day. When Miss Caroline held out the money for Walter he shook his head. This event happened three times until someone said “Go on Scout and tell her.” Scout explained to her that he’s a Cunningham and that the …show more content…
Dubose because she was calling Atticus everything but a white man and he cut the tops off of all her camellia bushes but when his dad finds out what he did he was punished. His punishment was to tend to her flowers until they grew back and to read to her every week night. I think it takes courage to go to her house after he just damaged her flowers and stay their for a while to read to her. “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful. Said Scout describing Jem doing a dare Dill gave him.(page 18)” Said Scout describing the dare Jem had to do. Dill gave Jem a dare of going into the Radley house yard and touch the house. It took Jem three days but he ended up finishing the dare. Jem showed courage when he touched the house because he says “I hope you’ve got it through your head that he’ll kill us each and every one, Dill Harris,” (page 17) “ “He went the back way, through Deer’s Pasture, across the schoolyard and around the fence, I thought-at least that was the way he was headed.” Said Scout as Jem went back to the Radley house to get his pants back that he lost.” (page 76) Jem, Dill, and Scout waited until it was night to go to the Radley house and
