Organization is when you take information and structure it into a coherent pattern inside your mind (McCornack,77). Punctuation is when you structure the information into chronological order that matches how you experienced the order of events (McCornack,77). I use these two things to improve my interpersonal competence by keeping my journals in order and telling the stories or information in the correct order that they occurred. According to McCornack, “Emotion is an intense reaction to an event that involves interpreting event meaning, becoming physiologically aroused, labeling the experience as emotional, managing reactions, and communicating through emotional displays and disclosures” (111). In a particular journal I was told to write about an emotional event that I had went through. I felt that after I learned the definition of emotion and how to communicate using emotion that I could write my journal. Through sharing my experience, I learned emotion sharing. Emotion sharing is a way that people communicate while sharing their emotional experiences (McCornack, 113). I feel that knowing the definition has improved my interpersonal competence because I know the correct way to express emotions through my writing and to other people. Expressing emotions also falls under self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is a part of expressing emotion and through improving my interpersonal competence I have learned the correct way to express emotion. Feelings also are a big part of experiencing and expressing emotions. According to McCornack, “Feelings are short-term emotional reactions to events that generate only limited arousal; they typically do not trigger attempts to manage their experience or expression. (113). Although feelings are short-term, they are like “small emotions”
