Specifically Rap music. Hip Hop and Rap music is the seventh most popular genre in the United States. This style of music became so popular in the 70's in New York where it originated when rhythmic beats and tracks were combine with rapping, a rhythmic style of talking. Since then hundreds of record labels have been committed to making just this style of music. Cash Money Records was established in 1991 by Brian Williams also known as "Birdman" (Rys 2013). Today the record label has expanded and is now home to over twenty different music artist including: Lil Wayne, Jay Sean, and Busta Rhymes. Cash Money Records has a high influence on the pop culture we have in the United States today and is the second most successful Hip-hop Record Labels of all time (Shaw 2013). This miscommunication between artist and audience is the biggest element that keeps the African American stereotypes in place, specifically about black men. There is also a miscommunication here because the audience the music is meant for and the audience receiving is different. 71% of rap and hip hop music consumers are white, while only 30% is black or Hispanic (Byone 2009). When listening to rap music, that no longer tells a story one can be confused and convinced that a majority of African Americans live according to the lyrics in the rap artist's song.
