Vision And Vision Of Leadership

Organizational leaders are tasked with more today than ever before. Faced with constant advancements in technology and communication, organizations now experience firsthand both the instant gratification and any potentially negative or damaging feedback from consumers. In this fast paced climate, it has become even more important for leaders to have a vision for their organization, to lead by example, and to have realistic expectations of themselves, their employees, and the organization as a whole. These three aspects of leadership will help ensure that an organization is successful, under the best of circumstances or when they may be faced with a potential crisis.
Vision
The presence of vision is a powerful enabler. (Dees, 2013) It is the leader’s responsibility to craft and cast such vision, and to keep it before his team. (Dees, 2013) It is a clear “condition setter.” (Dees, 2013) This vision provides a clear direction for employees to follow, allowing them to see the end result that they are working towards. If there is no clear vision, it is then up to leadership to develop a plan that everyone will get behind. When there is no vision, it can cause serious problems with the cohesiveness and production within an organization. The absence of vision creates organizational confusion because the employees do not have clear goals.

A recent study of law enforcement officers found that when field level supervisors are engaged in proactive activities, the volume of proactive activities by the officers they supervise almost doubles (Johnson, 2015.) This is true during the day to day operations of the organization, as well as and likely more so when the organization finds itself in the midst of a crisis.
