My 10 person virtual team consists of five women and five men. They live on the West Coast and each of them is in the medical field and work for Kaiser Hospital and other hospitals in the area. The purpose of the virtual team is to perform research and to garner experience with performing research together as a virtual team in addition to working individually. With this virtual team each member will do research on the topic of AIDS. It appears that AIDS is no longer in the news as often as before. We want to know if the numbers have increased, decreased, or stayed the same. Because there are 10 persons on the team, I broke the team into two pairs consisting of five people on each team. One team will research whether AIDS is still …show more content…
With virtual teams, the problem increases considerably and problems are exacerbated due to distance, time zones, commitments, etc. “Not everyone can perform well in a virtual team environment. The members should be self- motivated and able to work independently. They need to be able to keep working effectively,” (Time Management, n.d., 2005). As we see, there are many variables to consider when working with a virtual team. Not many people perform well individually in an office. Apply that issue with a virtual team and you are asking for even more trouble. As long as individuals are competent and able to work independently without having to rely on someone for guidance or feedback virtual teams can …show more content…
When you are not live and in person and meeting each other, several variables are lacking. Some of the important variables that are lacking are being open to new ideas. Since people are on different time schedules and trying to set times to meet each other online virtually, this creates problems. With this issue in mind it is difficult for virtual teams to be open to new ideas. Some members will get the email about this issue later than others will and will not have time to think about it as other members have already spoken to each other concerning this issue. According to Angelo Kinicki (2012), there are eight characteristics of being effective team players. Some of these eight characteristics are “being open to new ideas and having other ways of working. Being able to share information, experience and knowledge that a member/s/ specialize in. Having the opportunities to seeking improvement. Being able to join teams that you value highly and in return able to be committed on that team; being reliable with members, doing what each other are saying and being respectful; results are oriented,” (Kinicki, 2012, p. 236). As we see there are many variables to consider when dealing with virtual teams. With the many characteristics that are lacking with virtual teams, being able to discuss these issues and resolve these issues takes time, which as we see is difficult at times

The challenge becomes greater if the team is scattered throughout multiple countries. Because these teams attempt to bring people together who speak different languages, live in widely separated time zones, and are likely culturally very diverse, the leadership needed is quite different than for traditional teams. While each situation is unique, today’s leaders should expect this challenge in their work. Studies of virtual teams revealed the top challenges to be verbal and non-verbal communication, building trust, rapport, and strained decision-making (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2015). To mitigate these issues, a leader can achieve success using a combination of transformational, situational, and pacesetting leadership styles.…

Also team members are self-motivated and reliant on themselves rather than others (Nelson, 2013). The book also states that communication effectiveness and stimulating work are two key human factors that determine the success or failure of virtual teams. From previously feuding lovers striving to coalesce the fragments of their broken marriage, to an operating room packed to the brim full of doctors and nurses, working as a team builds unshakeable connections and engenders the most significant of improvements in human interaction. In a virtual environment members use different influence tactics to impact team decisions. These influence tactics can affect how decisions are made, how strategies and policies are executed, and team member’s motivation, commitment, cooperation and collaboration. All these factors can affect a virtual team’s efficiency and productivity; therefore it is very important for the virtual team leader to manage politics in virtual space. In virtual teams there is no time to indulge in workplace politics as they interact in a limited time and discussions are more centered on tasks. Members of virtual team need to be more assertive in their influence attempts and have to focus on building relationships with their team members in order to be successful…

In our Business Planning Seminar, we have had the opportunity to work as a virtual team. A virtual team is different than a traditional team within an organization. Our virtual team consisted of individual team members who are separated by physical proximity and distance. Our team was not only separated by distance, but by time zones, cultures, work, and personal lives. Much like a traditional team, our team was united by a shared goal and our interactions were based solely on technology and electronic communication.…

One positive of being in an unfamiliar team is that there is less reason to be distracted by socialising (Cowen et al 2009) therefore the focus can be on the task in hand. On the other hand, working within a team with familiar people could potentially mean a more relaxed environment where individuals feel more comfortable to portray their ideas (Cowen et al 2009). The HCPC (2012 p.6) states that registrants must work in partnership with colleagues and share knowledge and experience thus furthering the point of the importance of working together as a team within healthcare to provide the best care to patients. As a group, the general consensus was that the best way to complete the given task was to divide up parts of work and delegate to the most appropriate person to complete. Studies have shown that this collaboration style of working is far more effective in terms of critical thinking (Gokhale 1995).…

The case studies “The Battle Over Working as a Virtual Group” and “How Do You Manage Conflicting Needs and Goals?” are great examples of what truly happens in small groups everywhere. While “The Battle Over Working as a Virtual Group” (VG Case for short) displays what can potentially happen when forming a group that only communicates via the Internet and other means besides face-to-face interaction, it compares in many ways with “How Do You Manage Conflicting Needs and Goals?” (N&G Case for short); but also contains many differences as well. Looking at the VG Case, we see a group who was assigned an oral report about the Civil War and it was decided to make the group a virtual group in order to not find it necessary to meet face-to-face.…
