Intimate Partner Violence is currently one of the many social problems our society deals with. Society considers an issue to be a social problem when it affects a large group of individuals. Samples of social problems include: poverty, discrimination and violence. Social policies are designed to undertake social problems and help create solutions for them. The introduction of The New Deal in the 1930’s by president Roosevelt is a great sample of a social policy. Designated to help the economy after the Great Depression, Roosevelt introduced many social welfare programs targeted towards helping the economy. For many social problems, policies are created; such is the case of those individuals who are victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Help has been made available for victims of IVP; however the screening process for IPV victims usually targets heterosexual couples leaving behind the LGBT community.
A brief survey regarding IPV violence within the LGBT was conducted and published in an article in the Health Promotion Practice journal. The survey targeted individuals from Los Angeles, second ranked metropolitan area in the size of the LBGT community (Ford, Slavin, Hilton & Holt, 2013). With misconceptions such as “men cannot be victims of abuse” and “women are not capable of violence” a lot of IPV cases pass by without proper acknowledgment from agencies dedicated to help victims of partner violence. Even thought the survey was conducted to a small population, it was very eye opening. Intimate Partner Violence within the LGBT community is highly misunderstood and it is my hope that agencies work on better screening for IPV victims to not only target those in heterosexual relations but those members of the LGBT
