Discord is set up so that the creation of individual communities is possible. In order to start a community, a server is created. This is the community with the largest number of people. The server used by this community, for instance, was labeled the ‘No Chill Zone’, as a satyrical reference to a pop phrase used on the internet (“_____ has no chill.”). Within the server, there are text channels. These include pictures, text, and video. Voice channels are created within the servers to allow members to speak to one another while they share media through the conversation threads. The first three topics are commonalities between most, if not all, of the members. Contrary to the stigma associated with video game communities, that their focus is aimed outside of the real world, most of the conversation in the community in question concerned members’ personal lives. When asked about the content of conversation through Discord, Chase said, “We talk about other things like how our days are - like any other conversation in person goes.” On another level, many conversations involved metadiscourse about the interactions between gamers and people in real life. Christopher Poole, the creator of 4-Chan, another online forum, said this about the changing online world: “We went from a web that was interest-driven, and then we transitioned into a web where the connections were in-person, real-life friendship relationships.” (Krotoski, “Online identity: is authenticity of anonymity more important?”) In general, some of the use and intention of Discord are synonymous; participants use the application for its intended purpose by discussing online gaming. By using it for this purpose, users addresses the value of fantasy-consumption associated with ideal identity. The use, however, has also extended its purpose. Rather than being fully engulfed in discussion about gaming, most online conversation involves real life. Players spend time together though Discord as well as in the real world, and a large portion of the conversation contains elements and subject matter of real world circumstances.
