A child’s imagination is a beautiful thing; the possibilities of what they can be when they grow up are limitless. If you were to ask my five-year-old self, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” the answer would’ve undoubtedly been a veterinarian. My passion for animals was sparked at a young age, and I was fortunate enough to have grown up surrounded by them. I spent days at my grandparents’ farm helping grandpa do chores and sneaking the horses extra sugar cubes at every opportunity, then dragging my feet at the end of the day when it was time to go home. However, our lives do not always follow the path that we imagine as children. My journey toward the decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine has been nontraditional, but the experiences I’ve had along the way have prepared me to take the next step.

One concern I had about becoming a vet was becoming emotionally invested, which I once would have considered unprofessional. However, I have realized that an emotional connection with both the animal and owner is vital. To me, veterinary medicine is a love for science and the way it can be applied to help animals and people. It is loving a challenge, working to find the answer, and persevering even when the first attempt is not successful. I have a strong interest in equine medicine and reproductive work, and plan to one day work in a mixed practice clinic incorporating these with small animal work. I am passionate about this field and I am prepared to put in the work necessary to fulfill my goals. People continually search for a way to turn their passion into a career and I’m confident that I can do that through veterinary medicine. I am prepared and eager to take the next step in my
