“Leave it alone, it will go away” is the instructions doctors specify to patients and parents of children with a vascular birthmark (“Vascular Birthmarks”). According to research, “It is estimated that approximately 10% of births have a vascular birthmark – that’s about 400,000 children per year in the United States alone” (“Vascular Birthmarks”). The two main types of vascular birthmarks are Hemangiomas, a non-cancerous tumor of skin composed of abnormal lymph vessels, and Malformations, an inborn growth of skin containing arteries, capillaries, veins, or lymphatic vessels. This is where steroid therapy takes place by shrinking and affecting the growth of hemangiomas before they reach their maximum development (“Hemangiomas – Management”). In fact large or more serious hemangiomas can be treated with steroids in multiple ways; steroids can be given orally, intravenously (injected into the hemangiomas), and topically. While steroid treatments have many advantages they also have numerous side effects and risks. For example, a major disadvantage of steroid therapy is rebound growth. In other words, there is a chance that the majority of the lesions will return after the treatment (“Hemangiomas – Management”). Another rare side effect is known as Addisonian crisis (“Hemangiomas – Management”). According to the vascular birthmark institute, “Since our bodies make steroid which is necessary for certain important metabolic functions, the administration of a high dose, for a prolonged period (greater than 21 days), will stop the adrenal glands from manufacturing steroid” (“Hemangiomas – Management”). Steroids are essential for survival because they help the body recover from infections and fevers. Although, steroids have many disadvantages; the majority of steroid treatments have fantastic results.
