The Importance Of VARK Learning Assessment

Improved Essays
Not many people know there are multiple ways one can learn new information. Not everyone can receive the information the same way and retain it for future use. Some people are visual learners, aural learners, kinesthetic learners, or learn best by reading and writing the information. The VARK Learning assessment was an interesting tool that informed me of the exact type of learner I am. This assessment placed me into the kinesthetic learner group. This explains many issues I had in the past with finding myself drifting off in class while the teacher would be in the middle of a lecture. Also, the information I received from this assessment gave me a multitude of techniques for effectively studying. Now that I have been made aware of the type of learner I am, I feel as though I am ready to take on college successfully. According to the VARK website, as a kinesthetic learner, you learn best by interacting and relating the information to real life situations. A kinesthetic learner does better with retaining information that is acquired while doing things such as going on field trips, interacting with hands on models, or learning through trial and error. I personally prefer to learn by doing hands on activities. These kinds of activities I feel are easier to retain …show more content…
The textbook suggests that for exams to write practice answers and make models (Ciccarelli & White, 2015). This information is extremely helpful because normally I would just reread all the information from my notes and reread the textbook chapters and never really retain the information I read. If I write down the practice answers and make sense out of the information by relating it to information I already know, I will be more likely to retain the information and not freeze up and second guess myself when it comes to exams. This strategy will help me in the near future be successful while taking exams as

According to The Vark learning styles questionnaire the two learning styles that I learn best with best are aural and kinesthetic. Aural means I learn best when hearing the information spoken and by asking questions about the concept I am learning. The other way I learn best is being kinesthetic which means I use my five senses and hands on experiences to help me learn. The Aural side of me likes to remember stories, examples, and jokes, to be to relate them to the concept I am learning. I have found that I when attended class and really focus on what the instructor or professor is teaching I am able to grasp the concept that is being taught.…

Lesson 6 Learning Assessment For the evaluation of the Agency Culture Assessment, I am doing it on Children’s Hope Foster Family Agency on the program Transitional Housing Program (THP). Doing a qualitative approach is actually simple with the THP clients. I will consider doing a 12-month research since that is the average time that the youth stay in the program. For the key informants, I would choose social workers outside the agency who are knowledgeable of the THP population and people who are knowledgeable on how to conduct a qualitative approach.…

I can use my learning style in college because when I am unsure of what the professor may ask, I may ask her to draw a picture when explaining. Most professors, I know are visual learners, thus most of their lessons are all in PowerPoint or they use the Smart Board when teaching. Overall, the professors at Broward College are very understanding. They recognize that every student learns a different and I really appreciate the different learning styles…

Kinesthetic learning style is a style that involves learning by touching or doing things. Kinesthetic learners may find it easier to make a model rather than just read or just look at the book. Kinesthetic learners prefer touching the information by being creative. Kinesthetic learners want concrete, multi-sensory personal experiences in their learning so presenting concepts during lectures using suitable clinical case scenarios, analogies, real life examples, and metaphors will benefit kinesthetic learners, as will incorporating videos and movies. Teaching with multisensory approaches will also satisfy the need of multi-modal learners, especially those who are not satisfied until they have had input from all their preferred…

While reading the article, “Relax, It’s Only A Test,” I found the point that students often get so anxious about the test or exam that it actually interferes with their working memory, and intern making them struggle on the test very interesting. Although I don’t consider myself an anxious test taker I do relate with the part of the article describing the wrong study method. I do often study by reviewing my notes and textbooks, which helps me become familiar on the topic, but that is not practicing for the testing situation. I love the theatre so when it gave the example of reviewing lines before opening night I was able to connect and realize I may not be using the best study methods for myself.…

There are many ways to study for an exam, which includes distributing learning and processing information deeply. By studying over a set period of days, information is stored better and it allows the student to go over information they don’t understand deeply. In addition, processing information deeply allows students to remember words, concepts, and meanings better since the student makes it relevant to their life by connecting it something. Other ways to increase chances of doing well on tests include retrieval practice, using visual imagery, mnemonics, and overlearning. By doing these different things, the chances of getting good grades for the exam will increase…

Kinesthetic learning is learning through experience from the application of your senses. I apply the kinesthetic learning style when it is available, such as labs for science, or on the job training. For myself this is the learning style where I can comprehend and understand the most as I will more likely be able to remember the experience. While the aural learning style is available to be used widely, kinesthetic learning is less broad. As a narrower field, it cannot always be practical to some things such as reading, or…

Strengthening the student toolbox by Dunlosky describes multiple strategies that students can use to learn certain amounts of information that the students have to know in a class and in turn strategies on how teachers can teach their students. These strategies were as follows for students and teachers being the good; practice testing, disturbed practice, interleaved practice, elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, and the bad; rereading, highlighting, summarization, keyword mnemonic and imagery for text. All of these strategies are and can be used by students and helped or hindered along by their teachers, some more than others. In my high school years I received multiple instructions to not cram study for a test and to space out studying for it in the days leading up to the test.…

Learning is multidimensional. Very seldom will a learner use just one type of learning style. There are four different learning styles: Visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic and multimodal. Multimodal is a combination of two or more of the learning styles. Those who are multimodal in their preferences can be more flexible about how they take in and give out information than those with a VARK profile that emphasizes a single preference.…
