The Oxford dictionary defines technology as “machinery and devices developed from scientific knowledge” (Simpson & Weiner, 1989). Technology includes computers, projectors, smart boards and many other types of devices that you may have seen your teacher use in your classroom at one point in your life. The decision whether to integrate technology into secondary school classrooms has become a large issue as the rise of technology has become much more evident in today’s society. I had the opportunity to speak to two secondary school teachers about how they use technology in their classrooms and what the advantages and disadvantages are. Both Mr. Johnson and Ms. Parker believe that by added technology into their classrooms makes the lessons and assignments more interactive as students can use the internet to go looking for answers to their questions. The aspect of adding something new to the classroom causes students to be more engaged in what they are learning. Allowing students to access the internet when learning causes a change in role for the teacher. Teachers are usually seen as knowledge dispensers that provide the knowledge to the students and the students are supposed to memorize it and regurgitate it back to them to prove their understanding. When speaking to both Mr. Johnson and Ms. Parker they both stressed how technical difficulties during their lessons cause disorganization and throw the class off its course in terms of time. Teachers find it difficult to integrate technology if there is a limited amount of materials such as computers or other electronic devices necessary for lessons (Li, 2007). When it comes to integrating technology into the secondary school curriculum, it can be hard for teachers to find a place where an assignment or lesson would be more useful with the addition of technology. Thus, making it difficult to fully integrate technology into their classrooms as they cannot find a place for it. Another concern regarding technology in the classroom is the lack of technical support staff and training to assist when the technology is malfunctioning (Li, 2007). Therefore, even if a teacher manages to fully integrate technology into their class curriculum it may remain difficult to use that technology without proper assistance and training.
