It is clear that the scenes in Modern Family is inspired by current events, but the ultimate influence in this series is obvious, it is this day and age’s modern family. Families now a days are not as simple as they were years ago. In the past, it was uncommon to see a homosexual couple with a baby and be well adjusted into today’s society. Modern Family’s use of stereotypes diminished due to pressure from society. A major event that happened in America’s history recently, as well as the world, is the passage of same-sex marriage. As of November 16th, 2015, 14 countries have passed laws allowing same-sex marriage, including the United States. In the first episode of Modern Family, Mitchell says that he and Cameron have been together for five years, but obviously not married because of legal reasons. Same-sex marriage became legal in California on June 16th, 2007, but due to Position eight, “On November 4, 2008, voters approved the measure and made same-sex marriage illegal in California.” (Ballotpedia). However, due to the court case Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court overturned Position Eight and decided that “same-sex couples have the constitutional rights to marry and to have their marriages recognized” (Williams). As of June 28, 2013, same-sex marriage has been legal in California. In the first episode of season five, aired on September 25th, 2013, it is reviled that same-sex marriage is now legal in the state of California. This leads to Mitchell and Cameron both trying find the most romantic way to propose to each other and finally in the final episode of season five, aired on May 14th and 21st of 2014, Mitchell and Cameron finally get married.
