Use of Social Media in a Business
“As of February 2012 in the United States, nearly all 18- to 29-year-olds (86%) used these sites, most 30- to 49-year-olds (72%) did so, and half of 50- to 64-year-olds did so” (Brenner, 2012). This quote is proving that the amount of people that have social media accounts is extremely large. Social media is becoming more and more popular amongst older ages. Brenner stated that 50% of 50-64 year olds are using these social media sites. Based on how much our younger generation already knows about technology, I predict that number will increase over the years. People log into social media accounts everyday, where they are exposed to new advertisement. YouTube is a type of social media that allows people to create or watch videos. “more than 65,000 videos are being uploaded every day, where nearly 2 billion viewers per day have access to them?” (Hearing and Ussery, 2012). This quote is stating that 2 billion people can see the videos that are being posted daily. If a business posted a video about their company or adverted a product it could be seen by 2 billion people. This would give that business a lead over other businesses, who are not getting the word out through social media. “Facebook, a social networking site founded in February 2004, with a stated purpose of helping people ‘communicate more efficiently with their friends, family, and coworkers’ has over 500 million active users worldwide” (Hearing and Ussery, 2012). This quote states

In an online essay, Richard Renneboog argues that: Social Networking Sites (SNS) have become "the next big thing. " They provide an unlimited potential for people to interact with others they will never meet in person as though they were close friends and confidants. While they offer the promise to greatly advance communications and tolerance in the world, they also harbour the potential for great harm through online gossip, bullying, and misinformation delivered from the safety of concealed identities. Advertisers and marketers are also poised to exploit the nature of online social networking in order to profit from their popularity.
