I truly connected with Barry when she shared her opinions on school. I agreed with her opinion that school is a sanctuary to children suffering in their personal lives, that art has an intimate power to heal, and that budget cuts are essentially hurting students. School was a sanctuary for me when I had close friendships with teachers who provided security and understanding for me. I grew passionate about art because it healed me in many ways. While I was always stressed out about school, art programs became a stress reliever and it helped me to decompress. It also helped me to discover a creative and innovative part of my personality and I thrived while creating art pieces. Previously in middle school, I received the same happiness and passion from the theatre program. While it became a safe haven to indulge in theatre activities and connect with my teacher, it soon was cut due to budget cuts. My school was distraught and the students were emotionally hurt. Although budget cuts are out of the control of the students, the community must come together to help our schools financially. School needs to remain a sanctuary to students, because for some children, school is the only place of security they can find. Barry explains the importance of public schools because it provides a safe place for children facing strong adversity. (Barry, 725) Schools need to embrace their students in security and understanding, indulge in their art programs, and avoid cutting those programs due to budget
