The Importance Of White Privilege In Society

Great Essays
Register to read the introduction… White privilege is ignored by whites in society because we live in a nation of white dominance. Whites most often ignore the fact that blacks and other minorities do not enjoy these advantages. McIntosh defines white privilege as the many advantages white people enjoy, often seen as normal, and are largely unnoticed by society. Peggy McIntosh describes white privilege as “an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks.”(Calihealth). All of these things listed are seen by whites as the “normal” things that are available to all in society, ignoring the fact that Blacks, Asians, Latinos, and other minorities do not have ready access to or enjoy these privileges. White privilege, expressed by McIntosh, is the ability to be surrounded by those of the same race, not being subject to constant surveillance in public, being included as a positive part of history, being able to conveniently shop for “American” foods and hygiene products, dropping in at any barber shop for a haircut and someone working there having the knowledge to perform the cut of my choice, and the list goes on and …show more content…
This privilege creates an ease that other races do not have, nor will they ever have, until the white race acknowledges that privilege exists. The white race acknowledging their privilege would mean agreeing that racism exists, and the white man would have to give up his power, agreeing that the other races have been oppressed by the white race. The racial identity of a white male or white female seems to be hidden, underlying, and almost secretive. "White" people have been placed on a pedestal for a long time, leading to stereotypes about other races that perpetuate the inequality(Recupero pg 1). White privilege has existed throughout history and is still a touchy subject in white society today. White privilege exists in almost every function of daily life from education, housing, finances, and even healthcare. Education, no child left behind, a right for all American youth, none of these things advertise that the best educators are saved for the white students. Mortgage lenders request that the “race” box be checked, only to discriminate, offering higher interest rates to minorities, and approving loans only in “minority” neighborhoods, usually those with lower property values consisting of low quality education, high crime and poor environmental awareness. In these lower class neighborhoods, quality healthcare is unavailable or severely inconvenient, while the white neighborhoods enjoy highly educated doctors, hospitals and clinics at every corner. Somewhere in our cultural unconscious lies the image of the brutal, animalistic, sexual savage. This image was created long ago as part of the cultural work that was done to make whites feel better about slavery. But even now, with slavery long gone, the images are still part of our cultural system and they impact the cultural meanings of white and black

White Privilege is an underlying “right” or “immunity granted” given to white people instead of color people. In the article “White Privilege Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy Mcintosh, her definition of white privilege is an invisible package of unearned assets (Mcintosh:49). Mcintosh explains how white people are carefully taught to not recognize white privilege (Mcintosh: 49). A good example of this is not being discriminated by the color of your skin, by your name, religion, and so on. White privilege is everywhere, from governmental positions to television to corporations, to wealth, class, just to name a few.…

White privilege is an inherent advantage, that is unearned and unacknowledged, yet practiced by whites regularly. White people typically earn more money and have more assets than other races. Fortunate individuals continue to fail to realize there is still inequality. They usually rise well above the poverty line, and live relatively economically sound lives. This is true for Brock Turner, a white male former swimmer and student at Stanford University.…

In today’s society, I perceive myself as white, male, heterosexual, able-bodied, upper-class, college-educated, and Jewish. That is a gift in today’s world. I am fortunate to come from a privilege background, but I recently started to have more sense of appreciation of my white privilege ever since I started to take a Gender, Race, and Class course. One of the readings that really caught my eye was “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy Mcintosh, and in her article, she discusses how some people who have white privilege do not seem to recognize the privilege that they have. She gives numerous of examples on how white privilege helps in real life encounters.…

I agree with Johnson’s explanation because I believe white people are immune to a lot of challenges minorities are faced with. However, the term “White Privilege” is something that most Americans don’t believe is real, despite the large amount of evidence that proves otherwise. This is an advantage white people have without realizing it, until it is suddenly taken away. The evidence that shows the advantages that white people have over other colors is overwhelming, but every time the term “white privilege” is mentioned, there is an unavoidable…

What exactly is white privilege, one might say? White privilege is knowing that one has unearned privilege but choose to ignore the meaning of it. " White Privilege Shapes the U.S" by Robert Jensen, first appeared in the Baltimore Sun on July 19, 1998. In this editorial, Jensen speaks about his personal experience on white privilege and how being white can give them more unearned privilege than those of other races. Furthermore, Jensen states that unearned white privilege was given rather than by working hard for it, but faces the choice on how they use it, and to admit they have benefitted from it.…

With white privilege comes a certain power. Wielding white privilege in your fist gives you the ability to argue that historically black colleges are racist, to argue that you suffer as much as the next person of color does, to scream and rally “All Lives Matter,” all the while denying you have this sort of power. Many white people do not know of its power, they do not know of its strength. However, they possess and use this strength in ways which they do not even realize. Without the acknowledgement of this power, people of color are left powerless and will continue to be abused by this system of bias.…

White Privilege White privilege is the idea that whites have a particular advantage in society over the minority groups in terms of social, political or economic situations. White privilege advantages whites in many ways. The most important way I feel that white privilege advantages whites in that they may never have to worry about getting in trouble with the law enforcement officers over unnecessary things. For example, with the Sandra Bland case, the officer that arrested her was put on administrative duties for not following proper traffic procedures.…

The article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” was written to inform the reader about white privilege and male privilege. It states that men necessarily do not realize that they hold an advantage over women just as though whites do not always realize they are more privileged than blacks. The author Peggy McIntosh thoroughly describes that just by being born with white skin, you automatically are at an advantage over someone who was not born white. She also explains that men do in fact recognize women’s status in the world and will do certain things to improve it. However, they are unwilling to do anything to lessen their own privilege.…

One example of White privilege in America is not ever having to think about how my race or ethnicity reflects upon how people will treat me. I also have White privilege because people treat me nicer or are more lenient with because of the color of my skin. “-some privileges make me feel at home in the world. Others allow me to escape penalties or dangers that others suffer,” (McIntosh, 1992). The amount of Blacks pulled over, arrested, or incriminated are proportionally much higher than Whites.…
