This essay will discuss the importance of scientific research and evidence based practice by comparing four different sources to support the discussion. Scientific research can be defined as “a process of discovery and advancement of human knowledge” (Research methods for sports studies, Jones & Gratton, 2014, p.unknown) Research is important in the field of sports therapy because without it there would be no development of knowledge in the different practices used by sports therapists. Evidence based practice is used to make sure that the most up to date practices are used, and that those practices are the most efficient for both the client and the environment. However, some are more successful than others, for example at the top of the evidence hierarchy for quantitative research design is Systematic Reviews, this is when a document is written by a group of people and they summarise their findings after looking at all the relevant documents relating to their question, it is also seen as the least biased. On the other hand, at the bottom of the hierarchy is ideas and opinions, these are less likely to be used as they are not based on fact and have no scientific evidence to support them. One of the journal articles “Effects of Relaxation and Guided Imagery on Knee Strength, Reinjury Anxiety, and Pain Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction” (Cupal and Brewer, 2001, p.1) uses quantitative data. Quantitative research is the “use of numerical measurement and analysis which can then be statistically analysed to determine whether a relationship existed between the two” (Gratton & Jones, 2004, p.21). The advantages of using quantitative data are that it is relevant to the subjective population as it aims to focus on athletes that have the same injury of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and all of the participants are at the same stage of their injury. All three of the authors agreed that there were significant changes in the anxiety of the injured players even though they had all used different methods they still come up with the same conclusion; however, some were more reliable and had more depth. The trade journal Sportex didn’t really have much of a connection, and wasn’t relevant to the topic as the author never answered the question he started with. The research in this topic could be improved if there was more of a balanced argument within the sources, this could be achieved if they wrote about some of the negatives and not just the positives. This would then make it easier for us as a field of practice to differentiate between the good research methods and the great research methods.
