What is Hypertension? Hypertension is more commonly known as high blood pressure. It is when the force of blood in the arteries stretches the artery wall past maximum capacity. This can result in health problems like heart disease or a stroke. Arteries are tubes that transport blood through the heart which then transfer blood throughout the body. There are two types of hypertension: primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension is the more common of the two. Primary hypertension is high blood pressure that occurs after many years in adults. Secondary hypertension is caused by a different disease or underlying condition. Fortunately there are many ways that one can do this. It can be as easy as changing a person’s diet or as hard as breaking a nasty habit. When changing one’s diet you want to cut out extra salt and fat. Exercising on a regular basis will help make one’s heart stronger. Having a strong heart is a great way to try bypass this disease. Another great way to help prevent hypertension is by knowing if it runs in one’s family. Knowing this can help one be more aware and cautious about the disease. If one knows it runs in the family they can make it appoint to regularly go to the doctor to get their blood pressure checked. Preventing hypertension isn’t always easy though. Some people may have developed a unhealthy habit or addiction such as: smoking, drinking. Smoking cause plaque to build up on the walls of the arteries, this causes even more of a risk for hypertension. The chemicals in tobacco also can wreck the artery walls. Heavy drinking weakens the heart, which puts one at a higher risk for high blood pressure. Overcoming addiction isn’t easy, one should seek a doctors help if they’re not capable of stopping on their own.

The most common diagnosis is with a sphygmomanometer. This is also known as a blood pressure cuff. This process is simple and painless. The nurse or doctor will place the cuff around one’s arm, inflate it, and read what the blood pressure gage says, The first number in one’s blood pressure reading is systolic pressure or when one’s heart beats the pressure in one’s arteries. The second reading is diastolic pressure or the pressure in your arteries between beats. A urinalysis is used to find out one’s hormonal and electrolyte levels. Blood tests are also used to find out one’s electrolyte levels. It also finds the measurement of the blood urea nitrogen and kidney involvement.Cholesterol levels measure the amount of fat and salt in one’s bloodstream. All of this plays a role in one’s blood pressure. It can either benefit or be a disadvantage. The ambulatory blood pressure monitor is a monitor that checks one’s blood pressure in intervals for 24 hours. It gives an accurate measurement of how one’s blood pressure changes from day to night.
