In 1830 France invaded Algeria because they want land, power, and religious conversion (3). These three things are otherwise known as Imperialism. Algeria is rich in resources and of course, France is greedy and wants to take over. The majority of Algerians are also Muslim so France wants to convert them to Christianity. France rules Algeria for a long time, however, the government treats many Algerians poorly. They try to wipe out their history, make them speak French, and give preferential treatment to Christians over Muslims. Algeria finally gained their independence from France in 1962. Even though they gained their freedom, there were militant groups who fought each other within Algeria and created civil wars. Over a million people were killed during these civil wars. Not only was death and destruction a major factor but as I previously mentioned poverty and unemployment remained in Algeria mostly affecting the country's youth.
Islamic terrorism started in Algeria because the youth had no hope or future. Islamic terrorist groups like al-Qaeda recruited hopeless young men and train them to kill. This is proving the authors point by showing how corrupt their government was. The discouraged youth in Algeria joined the Muslim brotherhood or different terrorist groups like al-Qaeda because they felt it was their only hope.
