For several centuries, doctors have contemplated the link between our mental and physical health. They believed that a person’s emotions are connected to disease and therefore advised their patients to relax their minds by visiting the spas. However, in 1800, due to the emergences of bacteria and viruses as other cause of ill-health and also new treatments such as antibiotic were able to cured diseases this concept lost favor. Recently, some behavioral disorder have been speculated to have a biological basis. Scientists are getting substantial evidence on the link between stress and human health.

This technique involves repeating a word or sound silently over and over again while seated in a comfortable position to avert distracting thoughts entering your mind. Studies by Herbat Benson show that TM reduces anxiety, lowers blood pressure and also can reduce body bad cholesterol levels (Cooper et al, 1978). On another study, TM has also shown positive results in reducing cortisol levels in blood brought up by stress, suggesting that it is a way of reducing stress. This technique has provided positive results to drug abusers as it is effective in reducing substance abuse. This technique therefore, should be used broadly as it is cheap, effective and no harm or safety issues are of concern. The efficiency of this mind-body control technique to lower the symptoms is evidence of how the mind can help in maintaining one’s physical health. Firstly, I usually perform Yoga every day to help me manage any back and neck pain that might arise. This technique involves lifestyle advice, spiritual practice, and physical postures which aim at unify the body, mind and spirit so as to reduce pain intensity and functional impairment in cases of chronic neck pain. The mechanism in which Yoga relieves pain is by one accepting the pain and trying hard to maintain psychosocial functions no matter the pain. Another mechanism is by being positive even if there is a lot of pain, negative thoughts on the effects of the pain will lead to one avoid daily chores and become physically inactive hence increasing the pain rather than relieving it. This is due to the fact that physical inactivity will lead to muscle atropy, which will promote the neck pain (Bussing A, 2010). Controlling body posture and tension can also help ease pain.
