Great customer service is extremely important in any job within the retail sector as employees are constantly interacting with customers. The employee represents the entire company, therefore it is extremely crucial to provide great service in order to attract and retain customers. One of the most important attributes in a successful employee is confidence, which happens only when the employee is well informed about the product and services their company offers and sells. Many employees are not able to confidently provide satisfactory service to their customers due to their lack of product knowledge, in order for employees to be successful in the job of sales associates and customer service. Retailers can not afford to lose their customers with poor employee training, since that would be negligence on their part. The overall performance of the company relies heavily on the employee 's performance, therefore training is necessary for both the employee and the organization in order to improve performance (Khan,Khan,Khan,pg.63). Training and development is also important because it helps improve the effectiveness of the company as well as the efficiency of employees in the company (Khan,Khan,Khan,pg.63). Training programs as well as on the job training not only improves performance, but gives employees motivation as well as a positive change in attitude (Aguinis,Kraiger,2011). Training also enhances strategic knowledge as well as it allows consistency in one 's performance in many different situations (Aguinis,Kraiger,2011). Employees that are given the opportunity for proper training are able to deal with different customers in different situations confidently and calmly, which prevents dissatisfaction in the customer, employee, and company. When a company provides an effective training program, it shows the employee that since the company is investing so much time and money on them then they want them to succeed. Walmart which is one of the biggest retail stores in the industry have decided to improve their training program, and this action was taken when Walmart had scored low ratings when it came to their customer service in the retail sector (Halkias, 2016). Stores in the retail industry that are aiming to improve their training programs, demonstrates to the employee how important customer satisfaction is. Walmart made the decision to create and implement better and longer training programs for all their employees not just to bring up their market shares, but to also retain employees and lower turnover rates across the corporation (Halkias, 2016).
