The objective of William Henry Scott in writing the book was to answer the question: What did the Spaniards actually say about the Filipino People when they first met them? This question led him to provide answers and details about the recurring systems on the Philippine culture before the colonial period that will surely give a clear sight for the readers to know what was really on with Philippines before. Firstly, it would be better to define the said terms. Barbaric, savage and uncivilized. Barbaric is defined as the state of being primitive and unsophisticated. Savage also refers to being unsophisticated, uncultivated and aggressively hostile. And being uncivilized talks about being socially, culturally, and morally unable. For which all of this definitions doesn't match of the pre-historic people of the Philippines. It was not true that the Filipinos in the pre-colonial times contextualize barbarism and incivility in their own personalities as part of the country.
One of the evidences of it that will really help disprove that the Filipinos before are barbaric and savage is that they were already using law before to maintain order and peace. They have specific laws that are needed to be followed by the people or else they will then be fined or be given a punishment because of their major or minor violation of the implemented law. Based on the given definitions of their view to Filipinos before, it follows that it was really disproved since they already had laws before that they have a rule to be followed, therefore they are sophisticated and socially
