Why Do School Teach Children How To Learn

For eight hours a day, 5 days a week, children under the age of 18 are stuck in school learning. Sometimes, they learn something useful and applicable to their daily lives. Most of the time, however, these children are forced to learn things they have no interest in and will never use in their daily lives. Not only that, but most children only learn these things long enough to pass the next test or perhaps the class, but by the time this information may be relevant in their lives, they 've forgotten it because they never truly memorized it. Many people argue against this opinion and believe that this education is useful. Generally, there are three main points that they bring up, that school teaches children how to learn, that if these subjects weren 't required than no one would learn them, and that children don 't know what they want to be so they need to learn everything. …show more content…
This is true, after all children learn great study habits when they 're forced to write research papers and other subjects. However, why is it that they can only learn how to learn with stuff they have no interest in? Why can 't they learn how to write a research paper on the different ways to prevent domestic abuse? What about a paper on the effect of different preventable mental illnesses? Many children, myself included, weren 't aware than many mental illnesses were preventable because our school only covered all the ways they treated small pox in the fifteenth century. History may be important, but a large number of people don 't need to know the exact name of the island the Aztecs chose to live on. Instead of memorizing that island for a week and then forgetting it after the test because they 'll never use it as an adult. School can teach children how to learn without forcing them to learn things they don 't
