The Benefits Of Zoos

People can feel the joy of spending time with family and friends while also experiencing the closeness of wild animals. It can create quite a rush and bring excitement to those peering through the animal’s habitat. There are many things that bring people to the zoo and many good deeds done by the zoo. However, there are also major welfare issues that needed to be addressed as well. People go to the zoo to for entertainment and socialization as well as come close to the wild. Many species are going extinct or becoming endangered in the wild (theguardian.com). By having these animals in zoos it is keeping them form going completely extinct. The animals may not survive in the wild due to natural causes such as being hunted by predators, natural weather patterns, or becoming sick or injured. Any of these can cause an animal to become extinct or endangered. If there are a few in captivity they can reproduce and keep the animal from going fully extinct. Furthermore, scientist and ecologists can research the animals held in zoos. This is all wonderful, but there are many downfalls to zoos as well. A few of those such downfalls are lack of natural living, increased stereotypes, and increased stress. A lack of natural living refers to both the environment and the animal’s behavior. A zoos enclosure may come close to many of the animal’s natural habitat but they are not exactly the same as the animal’s natural habitat (animalsupport.org). Also an animal’s natural behavior will be affected by being in a cage (greengarageblog.com). If an animal is born into captivity its natural behavior might differ from an animal in the wild. Likewise, an animal who is captured then brought to a zoo will exhibit unwanted behaviors (greengarageblog.org). Both of these situations may not help in the sense of research to save the

The question of the impact of captivity on animals remains one of the most challenging and controversial over the several decades. Some people disagree that zoos are an important part of animals conservation as they believe sanctuaries in animal's native habitat would bring more positive results as animals suffer from the constant human presence and lack of space. Others argue that zoos provide animals with even better conditions than in the wild and that without zoos many conservation programs would not exist so that for endangered species it is better to live in captivity than become extinct. Both opinions can exist as there are many zoos in the world and their facilities contrast greatly. It is obvious that ill-designed zoos does not serve…

In "The Stripes Will Survive" by Jacqueline Adams, "The Zoos Go Wild" by Nicholas Nirgiotis and Theodore Nirgiotis, and the video “Behind The Scenes with the National Zoo’s Lion Cubs”, all of the texts claim that the role of zoos is to protect animals from extinction or from harmful things in the wild. Whether certain animals have potentially fatal diseases or are disabled in some way, zoo keepers are there to protect the animals and help them grow and strive in areas where they are not skilled. In "The Stripes Will Survive", the text explains what specialists are doing to prevent the extinction of Siberian tigers. Two twin Siberian tigers are included in the story to help the text flow into saying what is being done to help these endangered species. This nonfictional story is an example of how the role of zoos is to protect animals.…

Though, I know the establishment of zoos gave people the opportunity to see and learn about different animals from around the world, they play a role in animal conservation and education. It is a way of preserving species of animals that may become extinct in the future. What we do not realize is by keeping these animals in confinement, it is an act of cruelty and we do not know what takes place behind the scenes of the shows and displays of these animals. Studies have indicated that confined animals living with uncommon social groups, different climates, and unsuitable diets, unlike animals living in the wild, can lead to animals suffering from psychological and physical problems such as zoochosis. Zoochosis is a kind of behavior common in…

From zoos, to aquariums, to petting zoos, and even our own pets, humans have always been fascinated by animals, and have gone to certain extents to use them for learning purposes, preservation, survival, companionship, and occasionally entertainment. Menageries allow people to learn about animals from a safe distance and see some animals which they would never have seen if it were not for wildlife parks. Many argue that captive animals are not happy in their environment, and should be set free from zoos in their natural habitat. Although many find captivity cruel and unnecessary, having animals in captivity is beneficial to our society as well as to captive animals because when done right, endangered species are protected and well taken care of, people are able to experience beautiful wildlife,…

Supporters of captive breeding, along with zoos, proclaim that the released animals are actually acclimating well and that zoos have saved certain animals from extinction (“Captive Breeding” 69). Even though captive breeding is actually a failing system, in some cases it has worked. Native in Africa, Bongos are a threatened forest antelope that have been reintroduced back into its natural habitat with help of the AZA Bongo Species Survival Plan. Although this has worked, the plan only focuses on bongos and fails to help any other species (“Captive Breeding” 71).…

In these zoos, animals are treated cruelly and are killed for no reason, animals go through mental/psychological disorders, and lack the nutritious values that are only given to them in the wild. These reasons prove that zoos need to be shut down and these helpless animals deserve to live and thrive in the environment and habitat they come from. It is disturbing to think of how positive zoos are seen and how they are a popular attraction for people of all ages. Next time people go to a zoo, they should look closely at these animals and see the misery and depression in their…

I disagree because the zoos use the animals for selfish gains, ill handling of animals and also suiravel of the fittest. In my opinion animals should not be held captivity because most of the animals there can change to sick and also are upset for the people who see them in the zoos. To begin zoos often just want make money off the animals by not paying workers or giving animal’s proper care that need like for example animals need their natural habit for the animals.…

This would still not be justifiable for having animals in cages. When on a large majority, once the species is in captivity the behavioural traits and domestication that occurs despite all attempts to avoid them, stops the primary aim of restoring biodiversity. Therefore, it can be seen that they are being kept in captivity for no valuable reason. However, this view is different when compared to rehabilitation centres for animals that are injured or threatened.…
