This means that Macbeth is just going to leave it up to fate. However, as the play goes on, Duncan had to make a decision to give someone the title of ‘The Prince of Cumberland.’ He makes his son Malcolm the leader of the country, instead of Macbeth who he says he “owes everything to” (1, 4, 15-21). After hearing this, Macbeth took a different approach and says “The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step on which I must fall down, or else o’erleap for in my way it lies” (1, 4, 48-50). Therefore, in this line we completely see Macbeth contradicting what he says in scene three about only becoming King by chance. However, through this line, it is evident that Macbeth is highly considering doing something to make him King. Lady Macbeth heard the news about how Malcom is King. She believes he is not suitable and says that they should kill Duncan for Macbeth to take the title. Lady Macbeth told her husband her plan and he responds with “but here upon this bank and shoal of time, we’d jump the life to come nut in these cases we still have judgment here, that we but teach” (1, 7, 6-8). In the play, Duncan’s life was short lived. However, this made the rest of the story come full circle. For example, after Macbeth kills Duncan, Duncan’s sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee to England and Ireland since they fear that whoever killed their father will come for them next. (2, 3, 37-44) Additionally, Banquo started to become suspicious of Macbeth. This meant that now Banquo would be a threat to Macbeth since he would know he was responsible for the death of Duncan. Also, according to the witch’s prophecies, Banquo’s children will inherit the throne even though Macbeth will rule Scotland. After Macbeth was able to kill Banquo, the plot continued to develop because Fleance had ran off before Macbeth’s murderers he hired could kill him. Due to this, Macbeth still had a target on his back because it is likely that Fleance would want to get revenge on Macbeth for killing his father. Toward the end of the play, we become aware that an army led by Malcom and Macbeth was coming after Macbeth.
