Have you ever made a wish upon a star? If you have, that may be a result of Walt Disney’s 1940 film, Pinocchio, which first introduced the idea of a world full of fantasy through wishing (Fanning 80). Disney’s new world was not easily created nor successful the first few tries, but with arduous work and dedication his goals came true. Seventy- four years later, the dreams and wishes are still being kept alive through movies, attraction parks, many types of merchandise and an impressive charitable relationship with the public. The site of Walt Disney World was chosen by Disney based on three surveys. The result was the marshy swamplands of Florida (Fanning 115). The location of Walt Disney World makes it more accessible for the residents of Eastern United States to visit a Disneyland look-alike amusement park. Unlike Disneyland, Walt Disney World is composed of four kingdoms each representing diverse themes and experiences. The blueprints were everything Disney could have imagined and at once he began to pour his heart and soul into the “Florida Project” (Fanning 116). Although Disney passed away before the grand opening of Walt Disney World, his brother Roy took the project into his own hands and produced a huge success. Therefore, two of the main sources of income for The Walt Disney Company are through films and animations (The Walt Disney Co.). As mentioned earlier, The Walt Disney Company was able to make a name in the animation business through the happy-go-lucky character Mickey Mouse. “When people laugh at Mickey Mouse, it 's because he 's so human; and that is the secret of his popularity” (Walt Disney). Disney created a cartoon character that the average person could relate to and genuinely enjoy. It was not easy to introduce a cartoon character to the public. There were mountainous difficulties during the creation of Mickey Mouse and finding the method to make the character come alive. Disney was the first animator to synchronize sound with the actions of the characters on the screen through the cartoon “Steamboat Willy” (Fanning 57). Before this, producers and distributors did not want anything to do with Disney’s short films, but one man had the faith that changed The Walt Disney Company forever (Fanning 58). With the success, Disney developed a family of friends to go along with Mickey. These main characters include Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck, and Goofy.
