Overview of the organization and mission. Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a public university that opened in 1899 as the Northern Arizona Normal School. In 1966, it became Northern Arizona University as it is known today. Located in Flagstaff, Arizona with a current enrollment of 30,368. NAU, a doctoral university with higher research activity, offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees across a number of disciplines. A unique quality of the university is the early exposure to collaborative and experiential research between undergraduate students and faculty.

The Fred Harvey Company collection invites exploration of the history of one of America’s largest restaurant and resort companies. The collection consists of material from the Fred Harvey Indian Department, Grand Canyon operations, Harvey Girls, and the company publications department. It remains one of the most heavily requested collections. The story of the Grand Canyon isn’t complete without the photographs produced by the Kolb brothers from 1911-1971. Emery Kolb captured photographs of previously unseen and nearly inaccessible areas of the Grand Canyon. It is the preeminent photographic collection documenting the Grand Canyon in the 20th century. Tad Nichols traveled with many scientific expeditions, gained experience as a cameraman during WWII, and eventually produced his own films about the Southwest. His images portray the story of Glen Canyon, the dam, Lake Powell, and other well-known geographic features of the
