Telling A White Lie Essay

Decent Essays
As kids we were taught and bred not to tell a lie. We were essentially shunned away from telling a lie. Now in today’s society and the world we are telling lies from left and right. Why is it that we were bred not to tell a lie, but then as we grow up we drift away from that lesson? Many can say that we are basically cowards who hide behind our lies. Today there also exist, what is called as a white lie which states that you are telling a lie to help someone or even lift their spirits up. But isn’t that essentially lying? Why do we teach our kids who are the children of the future that lying is bad when adults do it all the time from lying to telling a white lie? In the quote by Nancy Farmer she states, “Any rats in a sewer can lie. It’s how …show more content…
That’s where I completely disagree with the quote because in today’s society there exist something called a white lie and it’s supposed to help the other individual instead or hurting them. Telling a white lie isn’t completely hiding behind lies or a personal act of cowardice but instead it actually helps the other person and it help those that are feeling down or in a bad mood. When telling a white lie the intentions are good rather than when telling a lie its intentions are the other way around. For example, if someone were to have a bad day or in a bad mood you wouldn’t essentially say they look horrible or they look like awful that would worsen their day instead or helping them. Instead, you would tell a little white lie and say they look like how they always look. Just from that statement alone, it could brighten up their day and leave that person with a positive mood. White lies are fundamentally supposed to help the others while telling a lie itself is basically helping themselves and not

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

“White” Like Me At the heart of American culture is the concept of racism; a continuous cycle perpetuated through years of injustice by slavery, violence, segregation, and hatred. Much like the symbolic “tree of life”, racism’s roots extend deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from each member of society. Yet in that survival tactic, it unconsciously steals a little more from one side—this is white privilege. “White privilege” is a mere social construction by which the dominant white group justifies their advantages and higher quality of life through diminution of people of color. To be a member of the white race, it is easy to overlook subtle inequalities—such as the wealth gap, career opportunities, education, etc.…

Most people will say that lying is never the answer, but they don’t always tell why. Lying often ends unethically, not only the can the lier be punished or feel guilty in the process, but it often goes further than anticipated. When looking back there seems to be more consequences on the result of the pretense than what the reward would have been if everything worked out and there was no lying. The Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Trials, and the McMartin Trials all proved that it is important to always be honest, regardless of the sacrifice.…

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…

Nation of Lies Why do we lie to others, but expect others to be honest with us? Today in society, lies have embodied the lives of many to the point where it has become a natural part of our lifestyle. Lying has become a natural habit for us, it has become a factor in how we carry out our lives. Whether we may have lied in consideration of how others may feel, or if it was because we did not want to carry out something we were assigned, lying has become so natural to us that we cannot distinguish it from what the truth really is. Lying has become a cultural cancer, as Stephanie Ericsson states in her essay, “The Ways We Lie”, that we have come to the point where we accepted it into our society.…

Lies are told by many different reasons. One reason of lien can be to protect anothers feelings. For example, a friend may ask for an opinion about how his/her new hair do look, and because you dont want to hurt anyones feelings u will lie and say that you like it just to avoid conflict and letting someone feel bad. Maybe it will be a bit helpful to tell the truth at times but alot of people rather avoid tge drama and lie their way out of the situation if they can. People lie frequently, hence why it is such a moral dilemma. If people were able to identify more hidden agendas and different types of white lies, it would be less of a conundrum. Many people are unaware that we as people make mistakes on a daily basis. Many individuals choose to see the good, whereas some would like to exploit the good in people and use that to their own advantage.…
