Advertisement from the 50s through the 80s The mechanics of advertising on television remain fairly similar throughout the ages. We’ll explore 3 different television advertisements throughout three decades and compare the similarities and differences of each advertisement. The advertisements reviewed are from the 50s, 70s, and 1980s. Each advertisement is designed to appeal to three different demographics. The first being a teen audience, the second and adult audience, the final being marketed primarily to children. The advertisement from the 1950s is for Coca Cola. The advertisement features various groups of happy teenagers hanging out at the drive in drinking Coke. The spoken message of the advertisement proclaims “Any time, any …show more content…
Since many teenagers do not hang out at Drive Inn’s or dress in 50’s dress, current Coke advertisements continue to focus on youth being portrayed as cool and happy guzzling sugary beverages. The symbols and images of Coca Cola remain the same. Frequent shots of glasses being filled with Coke are featured in close up shots with the logo of Coke clearly in view of the shot. The 1970s advertisement for Folger’s Instant Coffee was marketed to adults. The advertisement featured a married couple discussing coffee over breakfast. The woman was portrayed as a home maker happily making breakfast for her man, the male was in a suit and tie getting ready for work. The wife cheerfully discusses how Folger’s new coffee “sparkles” and is obviously better because it sparkles! The husband asks her repeatedly “but how does it taste?” Once he discovers how wonderful the sparkly instant coffee tastes, he kisses his wife goodbye and all is …show more content…
The advertisement for Power Wheels appealed to children. The advertisement begins by telling the viewer how cool a Jeep is. As the commercial progresses, two smiling children are seen riding around a large yard in a new Jeep Power Wheel. The voice of the advertiser proclaims that it is easy for your parents to put together, and features a rechargeable battery. The advertisement cleverly tells the children this so they can nag their parents for one. The children are shown smiling repeatedly, obviously loving the mini-vehicle. Similar to current advertisements, this 80s commercial is solely marketed to children in hopes of them running to their parents begging for a Power
