Smash on NBC has made a substantial impact on NBC as a network as well as its competing shows. Throughout its run this season, it has already done better than its predecessors in the time slot as well as beat its competitors. Based on how Smash has done and the factors affecting its success, Smash should be picked up for a second season. The factors that play into this are: the ratings for the past few weeks, the overall network rating, its scheduling compared to other shows, its marketing and target audience as well as the production of the show. February 20th, 2012, Smash reached 2.3 ratings and 6.7 million viewers during its 10pm time slot. From the premiere, Smash has dropped a total of 26% from its original 3.8 rating and 11.4 million viewers. Smash still won the time slot to CBS’s Hawaii Five-O with a 2.7 and ABC’s Castle with a 2.0 (Atkinson, 2012). Although the Smash has trailed off a bit, both The Playboy Club and Rock Center With Brian Williams played in the ten o’clock spot and gained only a 1.0 rating so anything above a 1.5 for Smash would help NBC tremendously (Crupi, 2012 “NBC, Smash struggle to find their voice”). Smash has had an overall impact on NBC’s ratings just this season. In just the second episode of the show brought 8.06 million viewers. Already this is much improvement for NBC’s overall ratings as well as their seasons this year. Smash as well as The Voice’s ratings have spiked NBC’s overall rating three tenths of a point already. This increase could mean an increase in revenue of nearly $545 million dollars for the third place network. Bob Greenblatt hopes these two shows are working toward reestablishing NBC’s Quality Network. He hopes to revert it to its former self, and the urban, sophisticated brand through shows like Smash (Adalian, 2012).
