In this clip, we can see a lot of prejudice and stereotyping, and even some racism being portrayed. A few examples of prejudice is when Pino starts talking about how Magic Johnson, Eddie Murphy, and Prince are “not really black” because they’re “different”. He is prejudging because he’s assuming that these famous people are “different” than regular black people, and that they “they’re not niggers”, but he cannot even explain himself. Spike was also prejudging when he sarcastically asks “you’ve been reading now?” There’s plenty going on back and forth. Pino is also a bit racist when Spike tells him that deep down he wishes he was black and he laughs it off, almost suggesting that blacks are inferior. Pino is also being racist and he is prejudging when he tells Spike “keep dreaming” and “then you woke up” after talking about taking civilization back because he obviously does not have any knowledge about the history of blacks and how they really started civilization. Stereotyping goes on in most of the second half of the video. There are about 5 different people making over-exaggerated, blanket descriptions about different race groups, including African Americans, Koreans, Puerto Ricans, Jews, and Italians. For example, different stereotypes about African Americans included, “gold chain wearing, fried chicken, biscuit-eating monkey, fast-running”, while for Koreans they said things like, “slanted-eyed, …show more content…
They are plenty of scenarios that show discrimination. For example, when they walk into the store, the white man is greeted with a “hearty welcome” almost immediately, as oppose to the black man, who walked around the store for quite a while, and did not get a hearty welcome. Another example is when they go to the dealership. When the white man approaches a vehicle, the black salesman helps him and takes care of him, as opposed to the black man, who walks around the car for more than ten minutes and gets no help, even after the black salesman makes eye contact with him. They discriminate against the black man because the black man has to pay a higher down payment than the white man, for the same vehicle. We can see prejudice when they both go to a record store. The black man is not greeted or offered help, instead he is actually followed around the store. In the video they state that black people commit more crimes as a percentage of the population, and suggests that maybe that is why he followed him in the store. That is prejudice because he is judging any person of color based on a statistic, and that is
