Bheki has been murdered by the police, “Blood flowed in a sheet into the boy’s eyes and made his hair glisten, in dripped on to the pavement; it was everywhere. I did not know blood could be so dark, so thick, so heavy” (57). His body is laid out with four others; eyes open to the terror of death. Coetzee portrays the body of five boys left out in rain as follows, “Against the far wall, shielded from the worst of the rain, were five bodies neatly laid out.
