As an online learner, aiming to be a professional in the field of research psychology, I have learned the following:
1. The skills and attributes I need in order to be successful are transdisciplinary and cognitive load management. Transdisciplinary refers to the ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines (Institute for the Future, 2011). This skill is vital in the global world as many problems cannot be solved by one specialized skill and in turn brings together researchers from different disciplines (Institute for the Future, 2011). An ideal worker in the future requires a deeper understanding of their field but the capacity to understand a broader range of fields (Institute for the Future, 2011).

Learning online is different because it has given students the ability to learn anywhere and time without the restriction of a classroom. Our access to technology has changed the way we can interact, communicate and collaborate online and essentially created a global community. The transmission model of education is commonly used in higher education and learning materials are provided under the key assumption the learner has little to no experience on the topic (Swinburne Online, 2016). However, there are different and more relevant theories of study that apply to the online learner - constructivism and social constructivism. To consume, produce and share credible information in areas of interest and study, I need to assess the credibility and value of the information source. With today technology, information is easily accessible though such sources as websites and online libraries, but we need to have a process to assess the credibility of the source we are reading and whether this information is reliable to use and pass on. Metzger (2007) explored a five key criteria checklist to evaluate the credibility of online sources, consisting of accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and coverage. Accuracy refers the reliability of the information provided by the site, and whether or not this information can be corroborated offline (Metzger, 2007). Anybody with internet access can upload information, which is why making sure your sources are accurate is important before sharing and producing information.
